The 04/05 group is not going into high school this next year so they have everything to gain and nothing to lose from giving GDA a go in its first year. The 02 and 03 groups are different because many of the best players are in ECNL and that league will still be strong for the next two or three years so the risk is pretty big to drop out of a sure thing.

It is so damn funny to me that people are willing to pay $8,000 to $10,000 per year to play ECNL specifically so that their daughter can play crappy recreational high school soccer, which is free.

Same reason so many people are willing to pay tens of thousands/year for private school. Better option for many.

GDA isn't allowed to charge a tryout fee. That's just one of the myriad "rules" that US Soccer is imposing on the GDA. Like no HS soccer or other sports. Like only 14 players see the field each game. Like only rec-level participants need apply.
