Timbers DA may have produced a good one

Only one match, but DA (and Eastside) alum Marco Farfan looked fine in his first game with the first team. He started, played the entire match, and quite nearly got a goal. Not bad for someone who can't vote and is still in high school.

3 years of Timbers Academy soccer doesnt produce anything...the 9 to 10 years of playing prior produced him.

Glad to see a local get some time on the field at left back in the MLS franchise in pdx.

Not a fan of the academy system and the mess it's made on the girls side but it was very cool to watch this kid today and congrats to him. The announcers mentioned several times that he's the first homegrown player to make it to the Timbers top squad. Which means the ultimate success rate is far less than 1%. Which is fine if the leadership is communicating and making clear what a long shot it is. My beef on the girls side is that every single one of the 50 players doing the girls academy this year is being told she's a national team prospect. That is worse than misleading. Worse than dishonest. It's fraud.

Typical Timbers win. Bootball over the top for the forwards to run on to. No wonder the TA clubs teach bootball thugball - it works at the rec+ level that is MLS.

Actually, modern pro soccer involves a fair bit of longballs. And the objection to "bootball" in youth soccer is that it sacrifices development for wins.

But in the pro ranks, when playing for paying customers, the point is to win the game. Teaching is for training. And whatever works, works--if the Galaxy can't defend "bootball" (all pro soccer is, by youth terms, "thugball"--the men's game is physical and nasty) then they lose. Even in Europe's , where they do know how to bring the ball upfield, there are a lot of longballs played.

Maybe the local ECNL teams should try it. It might produce an occasional win, vs. the 4-0 beat downs that occur regularly.

Honestly you can say that about BDA as well. They also play up the pro path and NT prospects. Over nearly ten years it has produced very few professionals out of the thousands of players that have gone through the system. Both GDA and BDA are very inefficient, but hey at least there actually is a decent pro path on teh men's side if you're good enough, either here or abroad (if really good and have a dual-passport)

What's wrong with giving up everything to be a USWNT star and then realizing you're not even going to be recruited by a good D1 school? At least those girls will get four years of believing they are superstars. Then they can go onto PCC or PSU or a couple to OSU/UO. These girls don't want any life besides soccer so why not let them enjoy it while they can?
