Is it me or is this a crazy play from US Soccer to try and control everything? Now they are targeting 4th graders. Really? So weed out and eventually burn out little kids through pressure and specialization before middle school and puberty. Love it!!

It's what you call a money grab by US Soccer and the six clubs in Oregon touting it for profit. This is a lab test. Let's take 75 boys in Oregon and make them all do the exact same curriculum.. boring.. non-creative... so after four years we can weed out the top five... and then blend them at U16 in Timbers Academy with the really good and talented multi-athlete outliers that didn't buy into the bs.

Now how that training happens I agree with the above poster - much of it is too rigid and formulaic. If a DA club near you isn't that great in terms of coaching and developing then there's no harm in staying out of the system for awhile (assuming you can find a club that is good at development). Plenty of DA teams have high churn at the holder ages and they have few will toss players for new ones if they're good.

Now, if you have evaluators who don't know their business (this is most of them, to be honest) then you are correct.

ID process should begin after U14 and kids have grown. Clubs buying into this should be ashamed. The end result will be some great 9 year old athletes now becoming great mediocre athletes in five years.. and some truly amazing and smart prospective players dropping out in 5th grade because they didn't make the squad.

What's needed is to remove physical maturity as a criteria for selection, and replace it with technique, tactical awareness, and mentality.

[QUOTE=Unregistered;1988674]The kids that will make it need elite environments by u12, and perhaps even by u11.
So you have effectively weeded out most low income kids here. This mentality is everything that is wrong with US Soccer today. By u11??? Those are ten years olds.

And yes, they are 10. DA is not meant to be a rec program. Most 10 year-olds will be better served by playing in recreational environments.
