If an Oregon player has a verbal with Mertz, is it null & void if she's let go? I assume the new coach would want to recruit their own choices.

a verbal commitment means nothing anyway. as a college coach, i would still want to accept them, but would be bring my own recruits with me.

New coaches coming in typically honor past verbals, but it does give players a way out to pick up new opportunities without worrying that it looks bad on them. However, the school would look bad if they cancelled on a kid, especially since the changes usually would still be happening around signing day.

In general college coaches honor previous verbals. The commits should circle back around and ask the new coaching staff. My first hand advice would be to reach out to other opportunities and see what it is out there. It is the perfect time to change your mind and it will not be held against you. In our case other coaches who had previously made offers looped back around to make sure we had not changed our minds. A bad choice can significantly impact your financially if you later desire to transfer out.

If Oregon can pick a quality coach it will likely be better even for existing players. Many of these players are very good and would have others options. Kat isn't warm and doesn't really know her players. It is all about Kat. Quality coaches care about their players on a human level.

A kid could opt out, but where would they go? Most schools have no spots left for the 2017s and 2018s. The kid to feel sorry for is the 2017 who finds out in December the coach and staff that recruited them is gone and they have to get to know an entirely new staff. That staff probably won't know anything about that 2017 class so it will be entirely based upon pre season practices. At least the existing players will have spring season to play in front of the new staff.

if your kid can play then she can play. Best players play. No need to worry about things you cant control. That should be your message.

Everyone says Pac12 schools have all recruited by end of HS sophomore year. That means that there will be no (or very few) open spots on Pac12 squads until the 2020 class.

Curious, in Pac-12 how many freshman play? Do most ride pine freshman year?

It also means that Kat's first 3 years were also filled with mostly verbals & commitments made by Tara, that Kat honored.

Kat's contract may be up soon but can easily be extended for 2 more years.

are Oregon State (women), there are a 11 players who have started more than 50% of the games, none of them are freshman (or sophomores, unless i missed one).

Unless you are talking about Oregon, OSU or Utah, they tend to recruit into their junior class.

Kat brought in new players both transfers and new commits. Obviously her first year was all Tara's choices. At one point Kat had 35 players and then she started suffering from mass exodus.

Kat not picking the players is not the problem. The problem is that the PAC 12 is very difficult league. I think she was trying to model her program after other PAC 12 programs with huge rosters and lots of internal competition. Unfortunately for her, many talented players are not willing to ride the pine and watch the team lose game after game. Couple that with her total disregard for the human aspect of the players and you get what you have.

Kat has attracted some highly decorated players to Oregon but it seems she tries to force it. She wants them to be the star and she almost sabotages other players to prevent them from being more successful than star player. I notice this year she is moving away from that mentality so perhaps there is hope for the team and maybe even her. A team needs to be a team not a cut throat group of people that hate each other.

Don't believe this. I know of two pac 12 commits who went summer before Junior and some top recruits who went Junior year.

But you don't understand. A coach who has his 2017 class in place, won't be likely to take a 2017 just because some Oregon recruit doesn't like the new coach. And if they do take them, there won't be any money. So a kid could go from almost full ride at Oregon to zero at Cal State xxxx.
