Steven Evans gives his bench a lot of run in this one. Outcome not in doubt, though ET did have a few good chances, including one in the first half requiring a brilliant double-save from Westside's keeper. ET's keeper also had some nice saves, as WT paid quite a few visits to ET's penalty area.
Next field over had a TA U15 game (against FC Golden State). In the first half, one of the TA players was sent off. In the second half, one of the FGCS players was hauled off in an ambulance. Not sure what happened, hope it wasn't serious (didn't appear to be).

They came out attacking with well placed through balls from the midfield to their forwards who were continually proved that they were much faster than the FC back line. I believe they had a 3-0 lead before FC's #91 scored on a counter, but was matched quickly by WashT. WashT looked to be the aggressor throughout the whole game, winning 50/50 balls and stepping to the ball while FC waited. WashT seemed to maintain a three goal advantage and every time FC scored, WashT would answer right away until WashT ran away scoring the last three goals. Very poor defensive performance by FC and hats off to WashT for executing a good game plan, attack, attack, attack! Not many goalie punts by either team. I think that it was very obvious to everyone (even WashT) that the officiating was not good at all, in fact the AR was jawing at #9 trying to egg him on (it worked). With that being said, those calls did not effect the outcome of the game whatsoever (one exception was maybe a goal by FC on a free kick that hit the cross bar came straight down and kicked in by FC which was called back for FC). I have to say that it was pretty low of the AR constantly engaging with #9. #9's dad told him to stop talking to the AR and just play the game, at which #9 told his dad that he is not talking to the AR, but just looking at him. Well, the AR did not like that conversation and immediately flagged down the Head ref, touched his left breast pocket and acted like he was pulling a card telling the head ref to do so, which he did! (This was explained to us through a translator on the side lines). All in all, WashT absolutely dominated the game and deserved the win, but it will be tainted in the minds of some FC faithful due to the two terrible referees.

I wasn't at this game (though it sounds like I wish I was--hurrah, Washington!), but the fact that #9 is a punk is well known within the refereeing community.

Larry Sunderland is going to eat his lunch. If this kid can’t control his emotions he will be back with his club by end of fall season

There are a couple observations that the Portland FC parents players and Coach can take away from this game. You have two players that are both dynamic at the top. The first of which is dirty and whose attitude is out of context with the age group. The other one is a delight to watch, plays the game correctly, and can find success without the unnecessary tactics.. Similarly talented, one plays with passion aggression but cannot separate that from playing dirty and mouthing off to players, parents and officials. The other one plays with class and dignity. He's elegant with the way that he moves up and down the field with and without the ball. If you could take the good from number 9 and leave all the other garbage behind you would find that beneath the rugged, dirty, and distasteful persona that he has exhibited there is a very talented player. Fortunately for Portland that player already exists (#91). It appears that number 91 will be back next year and number 9 will be moving on to the TA. Watching #9's father from the sidelines over this past year, it does not surprise anyone how this kid is maturing. His dad strolls the sidelines berating officials yelling at the players, yelling expletives in Spanish and generally is a sideline troll. Now, the coach, in a time where is player just received a red card mouthing off once again to the officials, could have taken it as a an opportunity to police his sidelines but instead decided to defend his constantly argumentative player and argued with the officials himself. #91 scored all three goals. The second goal was a beautiful one touch strike from the corner of the 18 that caught everybody off guard. It is worth noting that the red card came as the Timbers or leading 7 to 3. There were calls in both directions and I do not believe that they favored the Timbers. None of them resulted in penalty kicks and none of them resulted in goals scored. If anything, they disrupted the style that the Timbers were playing because they were far outpacing FCP and any calls made just disrupted the flow.

If WashT wanted to, they could have won the Oregon DA going away. Instead, they played their best players up in the 04 league, and took some beatings as a result.
But the two games against FC when WashT was at full strength demonstrate which side is superior.

And all WashT predictions carry an implicit caveat: offer void if TM plays for the 05s.
But like I often say--it's when predictions go wrong that things are most interesting.
