What a joke. Nichols is right. No male player would be suspended for making such a statement, just like no male player would have been ostracized by the mean girls when she said she was better than Scurry after the Brazil debacle. It's time women athletes be judged more on performance than manners. It's okay to have outspoken, unthinking loudmouths. You don't even have to agree. If they say something dumb you can think less of them but what she said was no big deal. Is it an athletic team or a traveling marketing effort?

PS She deserved to be suspended for letting Stevens drive the team van.

This was just the final straw. She's needed to be suspended for a long time for many different indiscretions.

I'm not a fan of Solo, but agree the penalty is disproportionate to what male soccer athletes get. Maybe it had something to do with Pia having the ear of Sunil?????

Should that suspension have been before or after the trial judge dismissed the case? The case is back now, but you wouldn't have known that then. Plus the domestic assault description is technically correct, but barely. The adult child of a sibling who doesn't depend on the assailant or live in the same household isn't really what the statute contemplates. Think spousal or child abuse, not drunken brawl with a nephew. That is not what the cases involving other athletes have been about. Ray Rice didn't punch his nephew. He punched his girlfriend, now wife.

Regardless, she should have been suspended until the case was resolved. US Soccer is gutless and this latest suspension means nothing as there are no important games in the next 6 months AND Solo's too old to make the team for the next round of World Cup / Olympics.

She is a drunk and a violent drunk at that. Us soccer has been, to use Hope's word "cowardly" in how they have handled her. They felt they needed her for wins so they looked the other way. No with no meaningful games in the near future she is suspended for 6 months. This accomplishes two things for US Soccer. One they try to save face by disciplining her and two her contract is terminated so they can sign her for less money when and if they think they need her again.

US Soccer is shameless. They did nothing when they needed her and are trying to stand on principle when it doesn't matter. That's not leadership, it's cowardice as Hope might say. Who knows, maybe it's even tactically smart like Sweden bunkering against the US and Brazil. It's still cowardly. Critcizing an opponent after a games isn't something that typically results in discipline like this.
