    How Elite is Elite?

    So now that we have 3 competing "elite" leagues for girls, it begs the question of "how elite is elite"?

    ECNL has roughly 80 clubs with 5 teams each = 400 teams x 20 players = 8000 players
    USYS National League just announced 256 teams x 20 players = 5120 players
    GDA has announced 53 clubs x 3 teams x 20 players = 1590 players

    Total = 14,710 players.

    Are there really almost 15,000 "elite" players in this country? Will all of these 15,000 players actually end up playing college soccer? National team? Professional?

    Seems like US Soccer just keeps expanding the definition of "elite" so it can keep the revenue stream growing and growing. Gotta pay all that incompetent overhead somehow.

    There are approximately 38,000 women's college roster spots out there. Approximately 25% of the spots need to be filled every year. Of those 15,000 HS aged players, approximately 25% will be graduating each year. You do the math. Are they all "elite"? He** no. But like beauty, elite is in the eye of the beholder. I'm all for the opportunities Title 9 has brought women, but it has also helped spawn the monster-business of female youth sports.

      What's three levels down from Elite? That's what Portland soccer is.

          You are the only one that has mentioned ECNL in their post. Looks like you are the fool. I'm sure you are used to it however.

                Title 9 is reverse discrimination.

                      Exactly! No big fat MLS contracts (other than for nearly retired former European stars), no big name stars that thousands of kids can name, wear their jerseys, see in commercials, aspire to be.

                            I think we can all safely say that OYSA is not elite.

                              In your own mind and by your own attitude.

                              You could don't need to watch the sports.
