GDA will be less. Also if you read the fine print.. tons of scholarship for travel costs.. which is where most families feel the pinch. Same as they did for boys.

Yes please the fine print when the Thorns materials come out (if they don't pull the plug on this).

Twice in this state's history has a single club tried to play in a national league on a regular basis (i.e. 9 months season):

FC Portland's run in the Boys DA. They will tell you with the benefit of hindsight it was a mistake. No local travel partner, flying all of the country, only wealthy kids could make the away games.

Timbers run in the Boys DA. Timbers have a boys DA because MLS mandates it; however, they are writing big checks to fund that program.

In each case it has cost a fortune. FC was out after a year and yet boys DA begged local teams to fill their spot.

Oregon ECNL is without question a better model from a cost perspective - travel partner, some away games that you can drive to, more teams (5) to spread coaching travel cost across. Also kids are getting games in the fall locally (HS ball) without spending a $ on travel.

You are asking for a miracle for Oregon girls DA to be cheaper than ECNL.

So yes please read the fineprint on Thorns, including number of away games; then just do the math of how much each of those games are going to cost.

All of the so-called "scholarship" money in the GDA is coming from the clubs themselves, not US Soccer. And the Thorns have not committed to any scholarships at all. NONE. ZIP. ZERO. ZILCH.

Clearly you are reading the wrong fine print. There is no money for travel unless the clubs themselves put up the money - otherwise families are on the hook for that. Since clubs are pushed to reduce DA fees they will not be able to afford high travel costs for players (think of the airfare to fly 60 girls plus coaches to an event). The money USSF claims was put up for scholarships is from the clubs themselves, not USSF. Even if USSF did put up the proclaimed $1.5M it works out to be two scholarships per team. Sorry, but big f'in whoop dee doo. Lousy travel - especially from here - and just one less national event vs ECNL. Fees will be somewhat reduced, that's it. The only boys that get good deals are the ones playing on free MLS teams. Non MLS Da teams are similar to girls - somewhat lower fees, you pay for the travel.

“We want to make sure that we’re mindful of the cost impact that is reaching the end-user, both the player and their parents,” said Mooney. “Whether that’s through the cost we cover from an event perspective, whether it’s a reduction in registration fees, whether it’s scholarship program funding, etc. Those are all things we’ll look to contribute to the program to try and help minimize costs."

So what? They reduced the league entrance fee. That amounts to about $10 per player. Big deal...

                        $10,000 less $10 = $9,950?

But we should remember that Oregon Ecnl is a near scam and just because some random team from Florida plays in it doesn't mean Oregon teams have anything to do with them.

They can't even get good players currently and the cost for what you are getting is nonsense.

How many players in the graduation class of 2017 ECNL are going D-1?

ECNL parent being psycho with this post.. again. Keep reading You already know... GDA will be better at subsidizing the top players from low income families... the very kids of color and low income that ECNL has been methodically been sifting out since 2009.
