CHARLESTON, S.C. (May 26, 2016) - US Club Soccer and the Elite Clubs National League are collaborating to create a new national competition and development platform for U-14 through U-18/19 boys beginning in August 2017. The Elite National Premier League (ENPL) will provide local and national regular-season competition, national showcase events, and postseason playoff competition for top boys teams across the country.

The ENPL will include both member clubs and member leagues (NPLs), providing club- and team-based entry into the competition. Member clubs will qualify teams into the ENPL in all five age groups each year, while member NPLs will qualify individual teams in all age groups based on performance in their respective NPLs the prior season.

The ENPL will be an independent non-profit organization with a membership-based leadership and governance structure.

"By working together, US Club Soccer and the ECNL showed that the first priority of both organizations is to build better programs for players, leagues and clubs to improve the daily environment for everyone," said US Club Soccer Board of Directors Chairman Phil Wright. "The ENPL will provide a great pathway for players and teams across the country and is another example of our commitment to support U.S. Soccer and its programs."

Just as expected, ECNL is now moving into two leagues containing the haves and have nots. All of the good clubs will move to this new league, leaving the bad clubs behind. I think we all know where the Portland clubs will remain.

Honestly federation has to take some responsibility here - let a part of their bureaucracy (Academy) declare war on one of the most successful leagues country has ever seen (ECNL) made up of the country's largest clubs . . . now ECNL clubs are striking back.

Let the lines begin for unwitting parents to throw money out the door trying to figure out how best to keep Jimmy/Janie prepped for the "next level." I don't blame these parents for trying. I do blame the various soccer powers, including US Club Soccer, for the money grabs - and that's all it is. Development my arse.

What is goign to be interesting is to see how many of the major ENLC clubs move over to us youth soccers DA program when the girls side starts. The rumor is most of the big clubs around the nation are jumping from ENCL over. Reading this makes me think ENCL knows that those clubs are leaving, so they need to reach over to the boys side to supplement all the clubs that are leaving on the girls side. The phrase I heard was "ENCL will be the 2nd tier league, once all the big clubs leave for the new DA program"

We saw this once before. When the OYSA Timbers league started. The OPL people said "our clubs are going to stay and we will be stronger" and for the first year or so there was a good debate that OPL was stronger, but even with them having stronger teams, its now gone basically and its all in OYSA again. This is whats going to happen when the Girls DA program starts. There is no way they could start that program without confirmation from the big clubs that they will join the new program.

Nothing wrong with being skeptical. Youth soccer leadership over the years have certainly earned the mistrust of their constituencies. But I think you are wrong in this case. I think the US Club and ECNL leadership are genuinely interested in creating the best development platform for both boys and girls. Maybe they are only doing it because they are under intense competition pressure. I do not care the reason; all I care about is that development platforms are improved for the masses. They have made a number of moves over the past year that are in the best interests of players and families. I think you will see the ECNL for girls change to this type of competition structure very soon as well. It will reduce travel, it will increase opportunities for many different clubs to play high level games without increasing cost burden, and it will increase exposure and quality training for more players.

ah.....no.

They're doing it as a f-you to USSF for starting GDA. There are players/clubs that shouldn't be in boys DA/don't want to be in boys DA. This will give good players (especially those at non MLS clubs) an alternative to still play good soccer and not have to give up HS sports. MLS clubs will be fine, some of the better non MLS clubs probably also. But weaker ones will lose talent and as a result become less competitive in the DA league.

As for the bigger girls clubs leaving for ECNL? also not so much. Some will, many will not - including some that GDA wants. There aren't that many non ECNL top quality clubs out there to fill the brackets of a 70+ club league. Initially GDA will be small focused on a few key metro areas where there's enough talent/club base. It won't be as big as the boys is now.

None of the top ECNL clubs are moving to USSDA. They know they will lose all of their players if they do that because these girls don't want to be limited to DA soccer and nothing else. The girls DA will be lucky if it actually gets launched.
