Well -- it took more than 10 years and about $75M gifted from FIFA and USSF before MLS became financially viable, and that was not the first men's professional league in the US -- others also sucked money from the USSF.

Last year USSF put more than twice as much money into the boys development academy program than it put into NWSL. ($3M versus $1.4M).

I think once you put 10 years and $125M (adjust for some inflation) into the women's professional league and development programs then you can make an assessment as to whether or not the league is going to be financially viable.

You cannot say -- "let's make everything even between the men and women soccer programs", after first giving the men 20 years of undivided attention and a $100M more than the women's program.

Do you understand why the team and lots of people are saying -- that proposal does not work?

It's not the investment that drives the public interest in this entertainment business. The public is tuning into a men's team that is being labeled a failure at a 3 to 1 ratio over the best women's team on the planet. If/when the men's team makes a run like the women have that ratio will balloon to 10 to 1...or more. It's been said many times already, but this is an entertainment business where equality rules don't apply. The women aren't performing the same job because they're not playing the men's competition. To invest more money into their program with no hope of getting a return is absurd.

Their pay is already in line with the interest in their event much like the fencers, softball players, and women's basketball team. Paying them more because they're beating the rest of the world largely because our country accounts for 60% of all women's players in the world. The competition level isn't even on the same planet as the men's because it just doesn't exist.

The future popularity of soccer in this country will be driven by the success of the men's team. All of the data, including ticket sales, tv viewers, and revenues shows the men's team earns far more money than the women's despite being labeled a failure.

Interesting link on another state thread -

Tennis was the first sport to pay equal prize money to women at the US Open in 1973 after being put under pressure from the reigning champion Billie Jean King, although it was not until 2007 that Wimbledon became the last of the grand slam tournaments to follow suit. But how does that compare to other sports? Athletics first paid equal prize money at the 1995 world championships, the same year figure skating followed suit, and the London marathon has always had equal prize money since it was first staged in 1981. Elsewhere, a BBC survey in 2014 found that out of the 35 sports which have prize money, 25 pay an equal amount to men and women. Those that do not are some cycling disciplines including the Tour de France, cliff diving, cricket, darts, football, golf, squash, surfing, snooker, and ski jumping.

But go back 10 years and the men's teams revenue and interest is way below where the women are now -- and the women have done it without the tens of millions of investment by USSF Give them the same investment and time and then see where the women are. The men are doing okay now only because of the millions pumped into building MLS.

Five years ago the average viewer numbers for an MLS game on Fox Soccer was 53,000. The NWSL numbers are already around 95,000. And, again -- that's with almost no investment of promotion from USSF.

The big advantage the women have from a marketing perspective is that the U.S has about 3,000,000 girls who play soccer. (About the same as the number of boys.) A company that wants to reach that market can focus on the national team. They are the only product endorsements that matter. The market is much more divided on the men's side A boy in Portland looking to buy a new pair of cleats or a jersey likely is a fan of his MLS team, and will root for the national team, but his favorite player easily could be someone like Messi.

The thread title and ALL my responses, strictly addressed the pay disparity between the men's and women's US National Teams. I would like to see the justification for paying World Cup and Olympic champions less than their male counterparts, especially in light of the information put forth by in the suit.
Because men are better than women. We already told you that. Gee whiz man.

What happened to playing for your country? Do other olympians make money? NOPE, only in endorsements after they win.

Why don't we create an American Football team of women? They, like the soccer women would win the World Cup and Olympics hands down. Then they could ask for the same pay as the NFL Superstars.

Geez folks the economics of Olympic athletes and World Cup teams is irrelevant. People love their country and the 'countries' athletes make their monies outside of these episodic patriotic feel good events. What's really sad here is US Soccer is also paying these ladies salaries in the NWSL so they can be called professional, Wouldn't it be nice for Paul Allen if USA Basketball paid the salary of Damian Lillard? This logic is nuts.

                    Interesting. Thanks for posting.
I simply believe that our WNT should make the same to play for their country as our MNT in the same sport when they represent our country. That goes for soccer, or track or basketball Olympic or national teams.

We are drifting into the topic of pay for individual sports like Tennis, bowling and Golf where they can make their own rules for pay, just like Beyonce or Jay- z concerts performance fees..

Team sports are a different topic.

Curious what the NBA all-stars get paid for being in the Dream Team at the Olympics...transportation, meals, lodging etc...compared to the women's luge team?

Sounds like US Soccer is doing quite a bit for it's Women's National Team players by subsidizing there pay in the NWSL, which is unprecedented in modern professional sprots. Maybe the Men's national team members should ask for this type of equal treatment and pay from US Soccer. Clint Dempsey could ask for a few million from US Soccer?

Let's all feel the 'Burn' (Bernie Sanders)

Men's and women's Olympic basketball teams should be put up in similar hotels, get the same per diems, same quality of training facilities, same quality of trainers & medical. The NBA & WNBA are a different story but Olympic teams should get the same treatment across gender for the same sport.
