    New system design

There is obviously a lot of posts about how the current systems are broken. ECNL, Thorns, OYSA v. OPL, so on and on.

Well, let's here some solutions. How would you like to see Oregon youth soccer organized from rec to competitive to elite?

Step 1: Remove Timbers from youth soccer.

I think they need an avenue for consolidation of the higher level talent. Personally I prefer the academy model over ECNL which is too easy to buy in. ECNL in Oregon is flawed immediately by there simply not being enough high level players to staff two teams at each age group. This is evidenced in the overall record of Oregon ECNL in league play.

And the far worse record of the Thorns Academy.

The Academy model may gain legs if US Soccer endorses. So, you can bash all you like but you might try objectively look at the situation. There is absolutely no way for two teams to perform at a high level at each age group. Zero possibility similar to the zero wins this past weekend. For some, such as my daughter it is very discouraging. She deserves the opportunity to play with other players of similar ability and not to be tethered to the majority or average player. This is simply not possible in Oregon right now. Someone asked the question about what could be done and that is my answer. If ECNL could lose one club then that would be a viable alternative too; however, it doesn't seem to be a possibility either.

This is a very true statement. I would add one piece to it. Bring in people who do not have ties or allegiances to one group or another.

Consolidation is easy. The true top talent simply needs to sign uo for the same team. The other ECNL team can be 2nd tier. It is 100% in the power of the parents of those top 18 players. Don't blame someone for offering alternatives - just don't sign on with them. It's completely within the power of the top players to all play on the same team. Consolidate! No one is stopping you but you!

ECNL is a great model. The problem in Oregon is the bad blood that was created by having 2 clubs vs 1. Since TA clubs were on the outside they discouraged their players to join ECNL by stating the exposure was overrated and they didn't need it. What happened is there are about 35 girls commited to playing college to about 5-6 TA girls.

The downside of ECNL is the depth in they could use about 4-5 more quality players and I am guessing those players reside in Oregon

It sounds good in theory. Sadly it doesn't appear to be working. My DD is already on the better of the two teams and we are still mediocre. By designating a actual path, and making it a little more difficult to get on the path (ie a true try out that doesn't have an outcome of 25-50), more of the higher level talent will get there. It will take a few years but having multiple options only benefits that average.

What does TA have to do with a model? Let it go and think outside the bashing. The reality is that for the highest level talent there is no place in Oregon. I don't see it is as "bad blood", "TA", or "ECNL" issue rather I see it as a bunch of youth clubs on a money grab. Everyone wants a piece as parents are so willing to buy elite. We have to relegate the money part to the back burner before we can talk about true consolidation.

The fewer clubs there are in the area, the more travel for games, and the higher the cost. USSDA for girls will be double the cost of ECNL, and with lesser competition.

But the parent mentality of "my kid must be a starter on an "A" team" is what keeps this from happening, even if that "A" team is playing in OYSA 6th division.

Mediocre within Oregon, or mediocre within ECNL. Big difference. Mediocre within Oregon has no chance of college.

And how do you relegate the money to the back burner? You willing to shell out to pay for all of the top kids to play and train?
