They use it for the same thing that other schools use it for. They try to play some of the better programs that are in the area whom they won't play in the season. They try to keep costs down by making the teams relatively close by.

There should be NO down years in recruiting. You recruited poorly. Time for a change.

If, as you assert, the reason Oregon-based college soccer programs are failing is because the local talent pool is a puddle--why would firing the coaches be a useful thing to do? Failure to convince enough players from San Diego to move up here?

There are Oregon girls playing at several of those schools. Also, over half of those schools are not on the same level and get beat during pre season by Oregon colleges. Some of it has to do with who you play.

That said, at the end of the day the coach has much to do with the success or failure of the program. Whether it is recruiting, usage of players, comradeship, or instruction it all comes down to the coaching staff.

The problem really is no one want to attend a school where it rains every day. No matter who you bring in the Oregon Colleges will suck. Might as well keep Smith, Mertz and the entire bunch.

I watched a show talking about the success of the Golden State Warriors. They said the team could have won 50 games without a head coach but couldn't have won 73 with their good coach.

As they put it a good coach puts players in the best positions to succeed and also makes them all feel like they are contributing. Do the Oregon coaches do that?

Everyone should be disappointed to see anyone struggle. UofP has had a couple of difficult years. The girls and coaches need a good season for morale and themselves I would bet. Hope this year on the Bluff is a magic one and the program gets back to there winning ways!! Go Pilots!
