2002 Girls RTC tryouts at Providence

At tryouts last night at Providence Park, I was shocked to see that 88 players were registered. Even more shocking was seeing a couple of ECNL players trying out. Are ECNL players even allowed to play in other programs like RTC/ODP? I also noticed over the summer that some of these ECNL players were playing as guest players for their former clubs or other clubs. Is this even permitted?

ECNL is US Club, OYSA is US Youth. You can do both but if you're really doing ECNL full time you won't have the time for OYSA.

what does US Club and US Youth Soccer/OYSA have to do with it? (Not being snarky, truly don't understand. )

They are two different leagues, so ECNL players can play in a different league but not within the same league.

So a girl can go to CU ECNL and still play for Eastside, but can not play for Thusc? Just trying to figure this out, we aren't there yet.

First of all, THUSC and Eastside are both in OYSA league now which is part of US Youth. This means that an ECNL player can play in any team in OYSA (US Club), but it would be completely ridiculous since ECNL has 3 to 4 practices a week and 2 travel games a month. The ECNL player would have a hard time juggling between their club OYSA team and ECNL, however I think there are one of two players in Salem and Eugene doing it.

Your DD's player card will be different. In ECNL it will be from US Club Soccer. In OYSA it will be from US Youth Soccer. The two organizations don't share data so it's possible for a player to be rostered on two different teams at two different clubs, if those clubs are registered with different sanctioning bodies. As for "discovery" players, ECNL allows U14 teams to roster 2 players that are not registered with the ECNL club (effectively "guest" players). Those discovery players continue to practice and play with their home club and get called up to play in ECNL when needed. Once rostered as a "discovery" player, the club can not "cut" that player until the next tryout, and that player can't play for any other ECNL club.

The girls in Salem/Eugene aren't coming to 4 practices per week. Typically 1 per week.

How does one become a discovery player? Did they go to tryouts like all the rest, and just tell the staff they wanted to be a discovery player? Were they originally cut but would have been next to make the roster and thus given the option?

Similar to players who play for Washington ECNL teams.

For us we only attend practices before home games and attended all games.

As many that are willing to keep paying.

First, discovery players tend to live a long way from the home of the ECNL team, often times out of state. Second, as there are only 2 spots available, they only go to very very very good players. If your DD fits both criteria, talk to the DoC at an ECNL club well before tryouts and let your intentions be known. Then hope that the DoC thinks the same way you do about your DD.

These discovery player spots are ideal, at the older ages, for FCP to bring in out of state talent that UofP is particularly interested in recruiting, given the obvious ties between FCP and UofP
