Consider the 7th grade girl born September to December. They now play U13.

In 8th grade they will play U15 (skipping U14). 2/3 of their teammates are new, and in high school. New team, no Fall soccer.

In 11th grade, they play U19. They are up to 16 months younger than the oldest, competing for spots in an expanded pool. Many will have a new team, or no team.

In 12th grade, they play U19 again. 3/4 of the pool has changed. New team.

Basically, in a 5 year span these players will experience 3 involuntary team changes. What percent of players will just decide club soccer isn't worth it? 50?

Hopefully the market will produce some non USSF leagues which meet the needs of players who love the sport. Indoor soccer maybe? I hope that rec will at least consider severing ties with US soccer.

Are our children being punished because Jurgen is too stupid to figure out how to beat Jamaica?

Let's keep perspective here. 70% of all soccer kids will quit by the age of 13, and it's not because of an age cutoff.

Call you DoC and ask them to please address the impending change to birth year. The cat is out of the bag and folks need to prepare.

I imagine play-ups will be at the discretion of the DOCs. A lot of talk here about coaches that are telling their players they can play up but when tryouts come I have a feeling a lot of parents will be upset if little Suzy doesn't get to because the clubs will need to find teams for the birth year pool. I'm guessing smaller clubs might allow this to field teams because they don't have enough players but with all the player movement / club hopping that will happen with the bigger clubs, coaches will still want to field the most competitive teams possible. And unless your kid is an absolute elite player, I doubt play ups will be allowed esp from U14 and older.

Play-ups are typically fine in younger ages but jr high and older play-ups are often moved back to their age appropriate team.

I'm surprised Washington are bumping the current Aug-Dec kids up by an extra year instead of having the Jan-July kids repeat a year. Perhaps they did this to accommodate high school seniors. But this doesn't solve the issue of club soccer for current older rising 8th graders who will be a high school year schedule when they are still in middle school.

Nothing solves the problem of Sept-Dec 8th graders not having a club team unless a lot of HS freshman decide to not play HS soccer.

And a lot of freshmen would skip HS soccer freshmen year if their club team stayed year round until the youngest on the team (sept-dec) were freshmen. If the clubs are smart, they won't switch to HS season until their birth team is made up of freshmen & sophomores. This would also help lower the number of injuries to top club players who play varsity freshman year and get hurt.

Yes you don't get a say in the matter. If it hurts 1,000's of kids that is just the way the cookie crumbles.

In the US one big effort has been to increase and improve the participation for girls. Girls are particularly invested in personal relationships. This will hurt those relationships and will probably negatively affect girls soccer in the big picture.

You need those mass dollars to support the elite .0001%.

Girls are in it mainly for college & friends. Birth year kills both. We already have birth year for ODP/id2/US Training/Academies, etc. this whole thing is a big detriment to the girls-even the USWNT. Unfortunate.

Age group names in the original Wash YS press release were for 2017-18 season. Actual age groups for next year (2016-17) will be:


2007 = U-9
2006 = U-10
2005 = U-11
2004 = U-12
2003 = U-13
2002 = U-14
2001 = U-15
2000 = U-16
1999 = U-17
1998 = U-18


U17 and U18 will be one age group for team formation and league purposes as there won't be very many 98's left to play as 2/3 will graduate next June.
