WST, the official academy for the Timbers

My son has been attending the WST academy practices and he has really enjoyed them. He will be playing U10 this year and we have been trying to decide which club would be best for our son so we talked to a coach after practice. We have narrowed it down to FC Portland and WST. The coach told me that they are going to be the official academy for the Timbers. I went to their website and don't see anything about them being the official academy. They are part of the Timbers alliance but he said they were more than that. Was this coach exaggerating or is WST the official academy for the Timbers?

Not true. Portland city united changing name to Portland Timbers and run the official academy out of buckman.

Fractures within the "alliance" already? They're all equal but the pigs are more equal type of scenario...

Sounds like the Portland Timbers are being forced to have U14, and eventually, U12 boys academy teams but that they don't want to be bothered with running them so they contract it out to one of their Alliance clubs.

This makes sense but then what is the point for the other alliance clubs? Why would EST or WT_FC want to be part of the TA if WST is favored over them?

Bend, Salem, Eugene & Medford Timbers all have nowhere else to go really. EST & WaT will lose a few younger boys to new younger DA teams but the rest of the club still makes $$ & has a big boys league to play in OYSA.

What is the point for those clubs to be a member of the TA?

There is no point. It's just a money maker for the Timbers. State-wide marketing paid for by the youth clubs.

Money flows from youth clubs to the Timbers, some directly, some laundered through OYSA, in the form of league fees, cup fees, registration fees, etc. On top of that the clubs pay to wear the "Timbers Alliance" badge and market the Portland Timbers throughout the state (very few TA teams are good enough to venture outside of Oregon).

And what do those clubs get in return? The square root of zero, at best.

You are way off base and spreading rumors, obviously you don't know what you are talking about. Registration fees are paid to OYSA. None of the Timber Clubs pay a fee to wear the the Alliance Badge ... unlike Crossfire who paid 6 figures to become Crossfire...

You are pretty much an idiot and the statement of few TA Teams are good enough to venture outside of the state is even more applicable to the OPL Clubs.

... sounds like your kid was cut or you were not allowed to coach for a TA Club.

Good luck in your search for the truth.

You're right. Clubs don't pay for the patch. The kids do. The MLS patch and Timbers uniforms are licensed. Sports teams make money when people buy MLS patches and licensed uniforms. You bet your @ss the Timbers are profiting from the TA. They also make money through OYSA since they administer it.

                              you must have a disability.

the OPL makes money because they administer the OPL League. OPL made $675,000 over 4 years off of the backs of the families that played in the Culdesac League.
