    Summer Tournaments

So the Oregon/SWWA tourney landscape seems to have changed a bit this year. Starting later and some interesting conflicts:

    5/23 Rogue Memorial
    6/26 Capital Cup (Salem)
    6/26 Clash at the Border
    7/10 United Cup
    7/10 PCU Summer Classic
    7/10 Adidas Cup (Eugene)
    7/17 Beaverton Cup
    7/24 Nike Cup
    8/7 Chinook Cup
    8/7 Bend Cup
    8/14 Cascadia Challenge
    8/14 Mt. Hood Challenge (U11-14)

Seems like having 3 tournaments on 7/10 can't be the greatest idea in the world. And what was Eastside thinking to put their tourney directly up against Mt. Hood?

This kind of scheduling is really irritating.
People complain about tournaments in Oregon being substandard and getting low participation, yet they do stupid things like this - scheduling directly competing with an existing tournament.
How hard is it, really, for clubs to coordinate a handful of local tournaments throughout the Summer in support of the local youth soccer community so that there's a better chance of turnout and overall success of the oregon youth soccer landscape?
Maybe it's just the idiotic OYSA/OPL feud still at work, but I think it's just lazy scheduling on the part of the clubs.

It isn't lazy, it is money. The directors get a cut of the income. They all say that tournament play isn't good for developing players, then they host tournaments and try to make deals with the other directors to send teams to each others tournament. All so they can make money. And some are lazy

I can understand THUSC and Eastside wanting to move their tourneys from early/mid June as they are often plagued with wet weather. But to put them directly up against other tournaments that will split the potential team count 2 or 3 ways (and really, who is going to do Eastside's tournament when Mt Hood is the same weekend?) seems like a sure way to lose money.

OSAA Moratorium week crunches the dates for all clubs

NO FIELDS(connected to Oregon School District) AVAILABLE TO USE JULY 26 to AUG 1st.

Makes the NIKE Cup a headache on Sunday July 26 this year.

Thank God NIKE Campus opens up for them to use toor they would be S.O.L

On the Mt Hood Challenge vs Cascadia Cup weekend...smart move by ESU to go up against the Mt. Hood Challenge--which is now affectionately referred to it as " the amazing race to your next field within a 50 mile radius of Portland" familes and teams can instead choose another tournament with only a 10 mile footprint for fields to play on-- and not have to deal with the cost of gas travel across the I-5, 217, I-205, I-84, 99W & 99E for the "Amazing Race" Mt. Hood Challenge.

          Bound to happen.

While it does seem stupid, the reality is most clubs won't do another club's tournament anyway. Certainly no Thusc teams are going to the Eastside tournament and vice versa. Ditto Addidas and Beaverton cup tournaments, even if you have them on separate weekends. What ends up happening is that you get all of your own teams to your tournament, maybe some teams from your national affiliation (meaning and OYSA tournament might draw a few OYSA teams to it), and then maybe a few teams from out of state.

Cascadia Challenge will get nothing but Timbers Alliance teams and then only those that can't compete with all of the out-of-state teams that come to Mt. Hood.

Good points, since the Mt. Hood Challenge is associated with WUSC at least on the thin surface-- this businees relationship between Mt.Hood Challenge and WUSC connects the Mt. Hood Challenge with the OPL pact of LOSC, THUSC & FC Portland clubs/teams and the fact that ESU is bonded with Westside, PCU, Eugene, Bend, Salem, Medford and (sort of) BSC in the OYSA Timbers Alliance (LOL).

Where will Oregon Clubs choose (LOL) to go Mt. Hood or Cascadia?

In the end it will play out to be a smart move by ESU as Alliance teams will now (choose) to skip the Mt. Hood Challenge (OPL) and go instead to the Cascadia Tournament (OYSA/Timbers Alliance).

                Funny Stuff.

While we laugh at the quality of all these tournaments and the teams they draw, they are "premier" level tournaments who, even if they don't draw many top teams, at least try to target top teams. But in my mind, the way to make money, and to draw a decent amount of teams, is to target rec teams. I don't know when the rec season is, but I would hold a tournament eithe during rec season or right after rec season. Charge an amount that is reasonable for rec teams and make it as great of an experience for them as possible. To me, that would make some money. Also, there should be more 3v3 tournaments. Those only require one ref per game and you can make all kinds of classifications to draw in more potential teams. You can have coed, competitive, rec, .... 3v3 is no contact, has no goalie and the games are short, so you can have them on a single day. Round robin in the morning, quarters, semis and finals in the afternoon.

Only the bottom feeder TA teams will bother with the Eastside tourney. It'll be weaker than the Chinook Cup the week before.

Worst tourney is THUSC tourney. Rec tourney and very few teams.

You got your wish and capital fc timbers added a 3v3 tournament this June, unfortunately same scheduling issue as it's the same day as the Eugene one.

Maybe the THUSC ECNL teams stand a chance of winning a game or two then. It sure doesn't happen in ECNL play.

And certainly wouldn't happen for any TA team if they tried it. Or the Thorns Academy for that matter...
