As was already pointed out, there were only 129 coaches registered last year for San Diego. That, at least IMHO, is pretty sparse for a national ECNL event. Perhaps the location of this event should be changed. San Diego is a great location with great weather but it is one of the more expensive cities to fly into for a lot of the country - particularly those on the East coast and the eastern part of the MW.

That's why my dd is not going, she's going to wait for the Friendship Cup.

It really doesn't matter for your daughter. There could be 1,000 coaches or zero coaches and the result would be the same.

There will be a lot of colleges in attendance. They don't all preregister.

Our Eastside team felt the same way. We had been invited to Surf Cup the last 3 years, but declined because we thought it was too far for other coaches to travel. I heard Surf Cup was going to change to a more central location like Chicago for next year.

Chicago Surf on the shores of Lake Michigan. Sweet!

Of course, because they want to avoid all of those harassing emails from players who are really interested in attending their school. It's much better to go covert. Don't tell anyone you are coming and then sneak around and watch games, dressed as a parent to avoid any detection. Soccer recruiting is much more like high school dating. You can't tell someone you like them, you have to ask your friend to ask their friend if they like you.

This is not about Surf Cup, but an ECNL event. So which Midwest and east coast events did your daughters Eastside team go to for better exposure than surf cup? My daughter received interest from a Big10 and ACC school from last years surf cup so sounds like a bad decision on your part! Although Surf Cup is not by invitation it is by application so you are misguided if you think the team was invited....

Surf Cup in Chicago? I don't think so. Have you ever heard of a soccer club named the San Diego Surf? The Surf Cup is in San Diego for a reason.

No, silly. Chicago Surf Cup is in November.

Surf Cup is in the summer and college surf cup is in November. The April event is an ECNL event! they just happen to use the same fields.

Over the years, there have been some huge tournaments in the mid-west, including in Chicago which attracted some of the top teams in the nation. For teams in the east and mw, this was as big or bigger than Surf. With ECNL, some of this has been lost however as some very good clubs have migrated over. I know it's hard to fathom that Chicago and Minneapolis have good soccer clubs, but I think it's just as difficult for them to fathom that there is anything resembling soccer here in Oregon. I know that California and Texas teams certainly aren't in awe of the teams here.

However, I hear those tournaments have refs.

Maybe if there weren't refs at the Eugene match they would have won.

No, it would be a no contest just like the ECNL matches when they had no refs, or when they spent 2,500 going to Dallas to enjoy the snow.
