No out-of-state comp for U12's this year

Looks like WA is NOT changing to 9v9 at U12. Will OYSA and OPL back out of this change as well, or have no out-of-state competition for a year?

Statement on potential USSF and US Youth Soccer rule changes
    February 25, 2015 02:53 PM

For the 2015-2016 seasonal year, Washington Youth Soccer will not make any changes to its operations with regards to age group definitions or Under-12 playing format.

Over the past year, Washington Youth Soccer has been involved in discussions with our parent organizations – the U.S. Soccer Federation and US Youth Soccer – regarding potential mandated changes to the youth soccer structure. Ongoing discussions include mandates to small-sided-games at certain age groups (e.g. 9v9 at U12), as well as a change from the current age classification of school year, meant to keep classmates playing together (Aug 1-July 31), to birth year (Jan 1-Dec 31).

At this time, USSF has not come to a conclusion on either issue. Washington Youth Soccer continues to support the best practices put forth by both the U.S. Soccer Federation and US Youth Soccer. Given that USSF has not come to a decision on either issue, Washington Youth Soccer will not act until advised.

Without direction, Washington Youth Soccer views any action prior to the direction from USSF as potentially harmful and disruptive to youth soccer programming. Washington Youth Soccer will continue to engage in discussions with USSF and US Youth Soccer in order to best prepare for any potential shifts in operations, and will be fully involved in the best implementation of potential mandates.

I didn't think OPL was considering switching U12 to 9v9. Where did you ever read that?

It was my understanding that only OYSA had those plans.

And if that is the case, it's not such a big deal. I don't think OYSA teams travel out of state for soccer.

OYSA already has stated that the current u11s will play 9v9 next year as U12s. Oregon insinuates they will make changes pending any mandates by USSF. Washington may reverse their decision if USSF finally makes mandates. Think USSF wants to wait till closer to tryouts so not as much time for complainers and Wash is mad they are taking so long.

No, OPL has just mandated for the past years that u11 plays 11 a side. More money that way. Screw development.

Probably why they have to recruit their talent.

            Fact check

Ummm.... check your facts. OPL does small-sides games at U11 as wel, but they play "soccer", not OYSA rugby/kick and chase, so they could actually play full field if they wanted.

USSF won't make a change now. It'll be another year before we hear any more about this. If OYSA goes ahead with 9v9 at U12 this fall they will be all by themselves on the west coast. Nobody to play but other Timbers teams.

                Director’s of Coaching,

USSF pulled the Calendar year change and the 9v9 U12 proposal from the table at the SFO meetings. We will not be implementing a Calendar year change or 9v9 U12 until at least our 2017-18 Seasonal Year.

Timbers run the DA and it's going down to U12. The OYSA & TA clubs will be fine. Same goes for switch to birth year. Aligning with the DA (especially if they start a girls DA too) will allow players to stay in the same system used for elite/ODP/national teams making that transition easier and keeping more players from switching to ECNL & non-DA clubs. Starting 2 years ahead of the mandate will only give OYSA an edge when the mandate comes. TA clubs can always make 11v11 all-star tournament teams or play 1/2 year up which is good for development.

Expecting courage/leadership out of USSF/US Soccer . . . well not holding my breath.

In terms of small-sided, I don't know if this gives OYSA and "edge" per se, but am a fan of smaller-sided and OYSA going this direction is positive (I think at u11 OPL is also going less than 11v11).

In terms of birth year, is this for sure in OYSA leagues coming this spring, has it been "officially" announced, and is for both boys and girls?
