    WVU on two years probation

What's of interest is that the women's soccer program is involved. I suspect that this will get the attention of every woman's soccer coach, especially in D1 and D2 as those are more heavily regulated.

    Note:

The Mountaineers self-reported impermissible phone calls from coaches and text messages to prospects and parents in women's gymnastics, football, women's basketball and women's soccer between June 2010 and February 2013.
I think it's wise as a parent to know at least some of the rules and what an and can't be done. Players should be aware as well. You don't want to put the coaches in a bad situation. Now of course, the rules are pretty silly. A coach can't talk to you at a tournament, however you can call him up on the phone and talk to him. So he could be 30 feet from you and you can talk over the phone, but not face to face. Pretty stupid, but it's the rule.

I could list some of the rules here about what can and can't be done at certain ages, however I might put out something incomplete or misleading so I think that going to your club is a better option. They should be able to tell you what can and can't be done. The last thing you want is for your kid to be the reason for a program going onto probation. It's wise to know the rules to make it easier on the coaches.

OP here and don't interpret the above as me blaming parents for WVU being on probation. WVU might have just misinterpreted rules or they might have willfully broken rules to gain an advantage. I have no idea. However, I am just saying that as a parent or player, it's wise to know what they can and cannot do so that you don't put the coaches in a position where they are potentially in violation of rules. And mind you, the rules can be fairly complex. Since kids sometimes graduate early, as early as their junior year, the rules might refer to "the year before you are scheduled to graduate" rather than "a students junior year". As with anything legal, interpretation of words and intent is important.

Ouch!!!!!!!! It is so easy not to break the rules and accomplish the same thing that I hope it was a misinterpretation or something un willful.

Well, just an assumption on my part, but because so many women's sports are involved, I am thinking that it was a misinterpretation of the rules. It appears that no one turned them in nor that the NCAA discovered it since WVU self reported the issue. All of that makes me think it was some oversight and they went back and performed an investigation internally and then reported it. The penalty isn't that harsh, so it makes me think that the violation wasn't terrible. I'm thinking that it was something along the lines of them texting and emailing recruits before the rules allow it, which is August of their junior year. Maybe they started texting and emailing in July or something because some staffer misinterpreted a date. Who knows.

Don't go to your club, the vast majority of coaches and administrators are quite uninformed. Simply read the information available on the NCAA website. Their booklet is very complete. No need for old or misinterpreted information. Go to the source.

There is a specific club in this area that has coaches who may want to take a hard look at this article and question what they have been doing. Specifically one person.

Certainly not talking about an Timbers Alliance clubs as they never send kids to play in college.

Yeah, those Warner Pacific coaches are always hitting up the Timbers Alliance "A" team players.

And yet oddly, there are more TA girls on the Academy committed to play college than on either of the two ECNL clubs. And don't worry, you kid won't be going to any college.

BTW, thanks for choosing yet another thread to make stupid comments in. You do know that even the ECNL parents think you are a moron. Congratulations, you are disliked by everyone! Job well done.

                          Just read this:

Per the NCAA’s release, several coaches involved (it does not specify which sports) “claimed a misunderstanding in some of the recruiting communication rules.” The school also cited confusion with certain compliance software.

                          From the NCAA:

A number of the coaches involved in the violations claimed a misunderstanding in some of the recruiting communication rules, which was the reason many of the violations occurred. Additionally, the school did not fully understand how to use compliance software it purchased to monitor phone and text activity. It wasn’t until the software company updated the software that the school learned of the violations. The violations occurred while the school was on probation from a previous infractions case.
Again, parents and athletes should have some idea about the rules and be sure to not do anything that they think is outside of them. And I'm not sure reading them yourself is the best way to get an understanding. Here is a case of a bunch of coaches who read them, or were advised of them by their compliance staff who read them, and it appears, got them wrong.

Parents and players need to understand that schools can't email you until August of your Junior year. They can, however, email you about their camps. I know that many players misinterpret that as the school saying they are interested. If the school doesn't email your coach and say they are interested, then the school is likely not interested in you. However, they are more than happy to take your money and have you attend their camp.
