    Really short sighted

I would say that is short sighted, depends on the school. If you are paying $7.5K a year for a state school, yep that is a decent offer, but 15-20K out of pocket a year for a top nationally ranked school that would cost $60K+ could also be considered an amazing offer. Especially if the kid also can get some academic aid and the family was planning on paying the in state cost of attendance ($25k a year in Oregon).

The PAC12 also has a fund available to kids after their eligibility is over to finish their degrees at their same scholarship percentage of aid. The smaller conferences cannot afford to do this, but some schools also offer help to student-athletes. It is not just a little amount for everyone, but it is for some. Many of the soccer choices kids make are based on a combo of being able to get an athletic and academic package. There are many factors in choosing a school and many opportunities out there for some of the players. To think it is a guarantee is crazy, but it does happen. Why do we need to have this negative talk on NLI day? Every kid who is having this opportunity is super excited and very blessed. Any help at all that they get for school is amazing. The people saying that there is ALWAYS little money for athletics just hasn't had the experience, there are a handful of girls out of Oregon every year that will pay nothing for school. Don't shame someone for trying to work hard towards that goal, and when it doesn't happen, whatever opportunities they do get would not of happened if they had not been trying to go for the big dream. For all the girls getting the opportunity to live out their dreams and play college soccer at any level from Oregon that signed NLI's today CONGRATULATIONS!!!

The sad fact is that women who continue to excel in soccer during their college years will have a very hard time of making a career of it after college, compared to men.

Who said anything about making a career of it. This conversation is about playing in college. Seems like no shortage of negative around here...

No way!? Having my dd live at home and make 6K a year playing for the thorns would be the bestest!

Actually that's not really accurate. It's basically comparing zero women's jobs to just slightly more than zero for mens jobs as players. There are more soccer jobs coaching youth soccer than playing professionally and those are more equally divided. Of all the men who graduated this year about 10-15 are actually going to make a career out of it as a professional player. The rest who actually play professionally will have a year or two and they'll be done. There won't be many of them either.

Yeah because there are so few girls club teams in the US.

And of those few, mostly men can coach them.

Oh wait? Women can coach girls. In club. In hs. In college. And be skills coaches. Gee. What an idiot you are. Yes. What a sad fact as you say.

So according to you we should tell our daughters to up on aprons.

Your daughter can't even start on the woeful local ECNL teams, the Thorns and other local pro teams have WNT players on them. Maybe she could be a manager or something. And many of the WNT players do quite well financially from endorsements, just for what it's worth. Of course this doesn't mean your dd won't still live at home, she just will be making $1,000 a year plus what ever she makes working at Stars Cabaret.

Thorns are a "pro" team? Really? So the players make enough money to live off without any other jobs or endorsements? And the Timbers pay them? (Hint: the Timbers don't pay the WNT players, you do through your OYSA card).

Or is it really an amateur team thrown together at the lowest cost possible to provide a place for WNT players to play in between national team games?
