Timbers ODP deal or no deal

The ODP process has changed a lot since the Timbers took it over. Does anyone know if the selection process has changed since then?

Do RTC coaches have a say or can they influence the decision as to who makes the team?

Seems most OPL players aren't doing odp. Now it's the TA coaches picking their favorite home grown players for odp. From what I've seen and heard, odp
Is watered down now - just like all of OR soccer. Seems like head coaches already know who they're picking so try-outs have been political & basically a joke as far as truly evaluating all the players before picking. Hope the coaches turn it around or even fwer will try out for odp.

So it sounds like if you DK is a starter in his/her team every game, theyre a shoe in on the state ODP team

Not really. If it is a TA team then it is highly likely. If they are from any other club then it depends on if they got in the door early in RTC and have a 'sponsor' in the ODP coaching circle of friends.
There are still some good players in ODP, but it's not set up to funnel in the best players as homegrown to MLS. That much is obvious by the results Timbers have had with generating homegrown players.

Actually we are on a boys OPL team and a number of our boys tried out and made it. I think they gave a fair shot to all players, regardless of affiliation.

Remains to be seen on girls side. Also TA players not a shoe in unless on TA club team of head coach.

                Wrong wrong wrong

The whole system is flawed it's all about making money not developing talent.

It's the ole boy network they will never compete with the other mls programs. It's who you know not what you do. And when anyone says something the shutters come down and the blow hard money bags hold ranks and say their right and the rest are wrong and we don't know how it is.

Well I played academy football and signed pro papers in Europe and find the system here disgusting. It's a closed shop and if you want your kid to be involved you have to pay. It's all wrong. You will never make it as a soccer nation

Why would we want to be a soccer nation? Most of those socialist countries are really screwed up. In America we watch football, basketball, and sometimes baseball.

You should consider moving back to Europe where you will be more appreciated.

I have had two sons play high school football in the south (nothing like Oregon High School Football). Back then you would get the letter Congratulations you have made the team, blah blah, and then the that will be $2000 .. basically to get started. Then they would nickle and dime you to death. Same thing with Cheerleading. I guess my point is that there is not really any subsidized system here. Even football can be spendy unless you are just that good. When you are that good no matter the sport they tend to find a way to help you play.

In answer to the initial question, it does still appear to be very Portland-centric and heavily weighted towards the girls born in the first half of the calendar year. So for the 01's there's a lot of u14's. My daughter was born very late in 01 (almost 02) and she's small so it's a huge uphill battle to stand out.

Even so, I thought she got a lot out of it. Extra training is always good and she loves it. She competed against some big strong u14's in her RTC pool and at the tryouts and even though she won't make the state team, it will help her be a better player.

I do feel like the RTC pools take too many kids. There were some in her group that weren't close to being able to make a state team. It feels like the fees from those kids are used to subsidize the eventual state team. I guess that's just the way it is though.

On the one hand you are saying that your daughter is not good enough to make the state pool, but on the other hand you feel like RTC pools take too many kids. You player benefited, but I will bet you that there are lots of people who think that only kids with the potential to make the state team should be accepted. The players that are subsidizing the state team benefit by the extra training and training with better players.

You have to ask what is the goal of ODP RTC? Is it get as many kids in the system collect as many fees as possible and maybe 1 will happen to come good. Meanwhile all the kids get a little better because they are training more then they were before.

                              OR

Are you trying to produce elite players. If this is the case it should be very difficult to make a team selecting only the best 16 to 18 players and having small intense training sessions.

You can't have it both ways. It's seems like ODP has decided on option one
