Maybe they are looking for more technically skilled players.
Like ODP and the late birth year phenomenon getting on these teams is about being noticed early and being supported by a politically connected coach. There are literally thousands of equally gifted player who may not be as technically polished but have the athleticism that could easily translate in to WNT or even MNT positions. However since US soccer is pay to play these girls & boys are NEVER going to get pushed up the ladder at the expense of the reputations of the Pay to Play coaches.

Until US soccer begins to work like the professional combines measuring each players physical abilities and the technical abilities individually we will be stuck with the results of pay to play while too many of our best athletes get pushed into other sports or quit all together!

The fact that you state "athleticism that could easily translate in to WNT or even MNT positions" says a great deal. If this is true, it speaks to the sad state of soccer in the US. If you believe this, I am sorry.

Could you imagine in a developed soccer country using the argument that a player wasn't skillful enough but "sure is an athlete"? Until we realize that our biggest mountain to climb is that of individual skill development we are without a rudder. I will believe this when a player can run faster than my son can pass the ball.

You see this every weekend from youth soccer all the way through college.

              .

There are plenty of low income kids that have gone thru our national team program. Soccer on the boy's side is still a poor man's game.

The better male athletes in our country just prefer other sports over soccer. Do you think travel baseball or basketball is free?

The WNT is more pay to play than the boys. The USA is one of the top if not the top team in the World.
