Realistically what can we as parents do to end the league split?

Until there is a third option there is nowhere for the money to go. Kids will play soccer and parents will pay for it. Right now there is no other option besides OPL and Timbers. Short of everyone switching their kids from one group of clubs to the other, which won't happen, there is nothing parents can do. Unless they want to start a third league and somehow entice clubs to put their teams in it, which won't happen either...

Some of you may have been around long enough to remember that meeting in SE portland, organized by the Gabe Ruud (sp ?) the US Club district rep. That meeting is what kind of started or had some basis for the departure of many of the clubs (not all of the great 8) that left OYSA.

The meeting was very informative and with that information, several of the clubs forced a meeting with OYSA staff to ask some very important questions comparing the two organizations insurance, registration process and policies and costs.

This might be what needs to happen again. Complaining here "unregistered" does absolutely no good. You'll never organize here. You'll never be represented to any of the clubs as a group. Your voice is nothing more then chatter and fuel for angry thoughts (poison to others).

It will take someone to standup, be recognized as the groups spokesperson and organize a process to re-unify.

Talking with your check book only has two effects on others:

      1. Your viewed as a "club jumper" by other parents and if you jump long enough, you'll find no pond to welcome you.

      2. The club that you jump from could care less. Your just one player/family and they will laugh you off to the rest of the team as just being disgruntled over something miniscule or claim they dismissed you.

OYSA (being the only one that offers this) will allow "independent" teams to register and play in their leagues. You dont have to have a club affiliation, but you will have to find your own fields and hire/pay for your own coach.

This is something that each team in each club should vote on. The manager's would go to a site submit the vote. This way everyone could watch the results and than make a decision. The individuals who run these clubs should be reminded who puts money in their pockets. The parents

You should write a letter to the governor and Oregon senators. Please let them know how you feel about the split.

I don't know of any good clubs that let the parents decide where the teams will play, either league or tournaments. You're paying a sizeable chunk of change for the teaching and guidance the DoCs and coaches provide, let them provide it. If you don't agree with that, why are you there? Go start your own club.

I suppose that you don't see a problem flushing 3-5 years worth of local U14+ soccer money down the drain with the split?

If you don't have an answer to the question and are happy with the situation just say so.

You guys take this stuff way too seriously.

At the end of the day is it really that big of a deal as long as junior gets one or two games per weekend.

Okay TROLL I'll bite! If you are going to spend even $3,500 for a local premiere team who plays regional tournaments you are wasting your money if you think it's going to result in a meaningful scholarship at a quality institution. If that is not the goal then save that money and have her play rec and put the $3,000 difference in the 529 account.

                    Info

Please post the details of former Oregon players going on to college programs and how much their soccer scholarship was worth, so I can better understand your definitions of "meaningful scholarship" and "quality institution."

This will help me to weigh decision to continue with club soccer or put money in the 529 as you suggest.

                    Thanks

You can go to any of the clubs website and see who has committed where. Many of those institutions are $40K+ so even a 25% scholarship is $10,000 the first year. The more expensive schools typically come with about $10-15,000 of academic aid reserved for athletes so you could be looking at $20-25,000 the first year if your DD is looking at those schools.

You shouldn't take my word for it either call up those parents and ask if they will share their experience and the details of the offers. In my case the value of the scholarship over the 4 years is going to exceed $80,000 so yes it was worth every penny spent to 0become successful in the ECNL.

If a player is playing soccer primarily for a scholarship, that's unfortunate. Play because it's a worthwhile activity. If it opens up a door, or provides some financial assistance, that's just a bonus. If the primary goal is financial assistance, all the posts that harp on academics are right. There's more money, and opportunity on the academic side than the athletic side.

So you are in this just for the college scholarship? The main reason to play competitive soccer is to get a meaningful scholarship at a quality institution???

I am going to repeat that you take this way too seriously have have your priorities way out of wack.

I keep that in mind when my DD doesn't have to pay full tuition at the school of HER choice and again every time she gets to play as a Freshman!

There is only one way to fix youth soccer in Oregon

                              Only orphans can play

If she studies hard she won't have to pay full tuition and gets into the school of her choice.

If she practices hard and has some talent then maybe she will also get an opportunity to play soccer. I don't think it will matter if her club team does OPL or OYSA. If she wants to play for a top soccer school then playing ECNL will be more of a factor then the other two local leagues.
