    $60K is really cheap...

LA Galaxy charges $225K for Cal South Regional League which is paid for by all clubs down south....San Jose Earthqukes charge $200K for Cal North Regional League.

There are a few differences. The Timbers took that $60,000 and failed to meet a single deliverable specified in the contract. Gavin then had the balls to ask for more money. The OPL said no. Gavin then caused the most disruptive split in Oregon history.

Before you compare Oregon to Cal South you should add up the number of teams and players. Then do the math. We are getting ripped off. The money being mooched isn't to subsidize their pros. It is so the Timbers don't have to actually pay for their DA program that they will profit from down the road.

Obviously $60K is a big deal to the GW and MP.

Do you think the Timbers are involved in Oregon youth soccer for the benefit of the kids?

The Timbers may not ever profit from the DA program. The DA is a requirement from the MLS. If the Timbers were serious about developing players then they would have an Academy program that starts before U16. They are doing the minimum necessary to be compliant with the MLS and your dollars are paying for it.

The Timbers did not deliver on a single contractually and paid for item in the contract. Sounds like they are already doing the same to OYSA.
Perhaps you would like to provide more detail since you seem to know everything...detail like what were those contractual deliverables? How is it you call it a contract now when there was never anything in writing?

As I understood it, the contract was largely about the Timbers lending their name to everything OPL, this included the OPL premier leagues being known as the Timbers Premier Leagues, the OPL state cup became the Timbers State cup...everything was Timbers. There was also supposed to be an ODP like training that would only be made available to OPL team/players. My son played through this so I remember all of the failed promises from OPL. The final straw was going to be the Timbers development curriculum. This was going to push OYSA out of existence.

When OPL got 50,000 into the 80,000 agreement and OYSA was not fading they got cold feet, they threw a hissy fit and broke the arrangement. Now hoping to look aggrieved they go back and construct the story about not receiving the curriculum. The only item from the agreement they didn't receive.

At the end of the day, OPL got everything named after the Timbers, they got their little promotional song and dance, and since the Timbers FO had to put up with Angela, Tom and Fraser I would say the Timbers earned every dollar of that $50,000

Also part of the payment from the OPL to the Timbers is so they [Timbers] would not pursue a youth league in competition to them. When the OPL severed that agreement, they ran right back to OYSA and offered to run their leagues, bring with them all the TA and others that would follow (PYSA)....or they were going to start their own league with PYSA and make it a 3 league state.

"You pay us [Timbers], we endorse you [OPL], we stay away from your mainstay income" Win-Win at the time.

                2h 2013 OYSA Minutes - Timber Related

                July
                Tmbers Update
o Chuck informed the Board that he has been informed that the OPC has severed the relationship with the Portland Timbers. It appears that the Timbers Alliance teams will not be playing in the Fall PML, but on track to play in an OYSA sanction spring or winter league.
                [ED Report - None]

                August
                Timbers Update
oMatt met with the Timbers today. They are optimistic about winter and spring league. They will be available to develop an agreement in a month. Office space is still uncertain. The Timbers are developing a soccer vision for youth soccer. Mike will present to the Board in the coming months.
[ED REPORT] —Portland Timbers– The Memo of Understanding has been signed and the Timbers have decided not to run a competitive league this fall, so we will run the fall PML in partnership with Washington again. The Timbers do plan to run a Winter League and the other competitive leagues and tournaments going forward. They have met with their Alliance Clubs and a number of others and have a commitment from most of them (all of the Alliance Clubs) to support their vision, leagues and tournaments. I expect there will be a press release any day.

                September
                Timber’s Strategic Plan
oMike Smith presented the Portland Timber’s Strategic Plan of Youth Soccer to the Board
[Reports now From Technical Director] Timbers Mike Smith was recently promoted to Youth Sporting Director for the Timbers. In the restructuring of the Timbers youth division I was given the title of Director of Coaching Education and Recreation for the Timbers. This is not a paid position. The position was created to help promote our efforts with coaching education and to give OYSA access to additional MLS and Timbers resources. Mike and I have been meeting weekly to create a plan for releasing the Timbers youth development curriculum as well as to formulate a timetable for additional player development initiatives.
                **
OYSA staff attended a meeting hosted by the Portland Timbers regarding planning for the leagues that will begin play in January. Plans are underway for high school age groups to play beginning in late January as an Oregon National Championship Series qualifying league. There will also be an NCS qualifying league for teams ages U11-U14. There may be a separate league for teams that want a spring playing opportunity but are not interested in qualifying for the NCS. There were committees appointed from the represented clubs to work on league planning and administration, tournament planning, and integrating small sided games for younger teams into league play. All Timbers leagues will be OYSA sanctioned.

                October
[note format of minutes changes; most of the following is from reports]
[Technical Director Report] - Timbers - The OPL is investing heavily in coaching education. In conjunction with PYSA and the Timbers I am developing a yearlong program to combat the OPL. This program will have bi-monthly education sessions covering a variety of topics. I am hoping to have the Timbers and adidas assist in funding this program to make it free for one coach from each OYSA member club. ***
[Member Services Report] -Leagues - Mike Smith and the Timbers are continuing to develop plans for the winter/spring league. Details should be
                published soon.

                November
                Timbers & Thorns League Update
o Mike Smith informed the Board that he met with clubs last week to answer question regarding the upcoming Spring & Winter Leagues. Overall he is feeling positive about the league.
                [Technical Director’s Report]
                - Coaching ***
In cooperation with the Timbers I have developed a yearlong symposium series for the continuing education of our coaches. Each bi-monthly symposium will cover a topic focused on youth club development. I have attached a document that shows our national courses as well as an initial symposium schedule.
-Timbers -The office staff has been working with the Timbers to help develop and promote the winter and spring leagues. We have had multiple meetings with the league schedulers and referee scheduler to ensure we haven’t missed any details.
I have attended two meetings to promote the new leagues and to answer questions about OYSA and our programs. The first meeting was with the seven Timbers Alliance clubs and the second meeting was for non - alliance clubs. Both meetings were positive and we anticipate having between 60 and 75 percent of the competitive teams in the state.
With the support of the Timbers we have created player development program using Futsal for the winter/spring months. This program consists of a 10 week U9/U10 Academy, 4 one-day Futsal tournaments for U9–U12, and a spring break futsal camp. These programs will generate additional revenue for OYSA. My initial projections have the profits between 15K and 18K.
[Member Services Report] *** - The Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns youth soccer leagues are now open for registration. There are 3 leagues:
                [then details leagues]

Current expectations are that more than half of the teams playing competitive soccer in Oregon and SW Washington will play in these leagues.

                December
                League Updated
oJohn Madding informed the board that registration was looking good. Registration deadline is December 9th.
[Technical Director Report] - Timbers - As we approach the league registration deadline we are anticipating roughly 75% of the competitive teams in OR will register with OYSA. Most undecided clubs that we are meeting with have stated that they believe we are the better choice, but they are waiting to see what happens. The cost of dual registration is also a factor.
                OYSA U9/U10 Leagues
I am in the process of developing U9/U10 SSG leagues throughout the state. We are working with clubs in the valley to host venue based leagues that will be used to minimize travel at the younger ages.
[Member Services Report]- The Portland Timbers and Portland Thorns youth soccer leagues are now open for registration. There are 3 leagues:
                [then details leagues]

There was a written contract between the Timbers and the OPL. I hope someone posts it somewhere for people to read. Then you people posting lies can be exposed.

It was 4 payments of $15,000 for $60,000, not $50,000 or $80,000. The contract was not about a curiculum. Clubs already have their own and no one was interested in the Timbers regurgitating a plan for them.

There was specific language in the contract about the clubs not competing with the Timbers DA program (MoreBull you're wrong). The Timbers agreed to support an ECNL program if it came to Portland.

Ask yourselves why any company would pay to advertise for someone else? Why would the OPL want to pay the Timbers to brand themselves the a Timbers blah blah blah? It makes no sense!

Wrong. Crossfire Oregon threatened Gavin. He doesn't want a competing DA program in Oregon like there is in Seattle.

The OPL did not approach OYSA after rejecting to renew the contract with the Timbers.

Let me make this simple for you. OPL was attempting to establish a brand. They had been offering soccer leagues for a few years and were unable to differentiate themselves from OYSA. Even OPL's state championship was called "OPL State Cup", original to say the least.

Slapping the Timbers brand on everything was a way they could try to distinguish their offering.
I tend to agree with you such superficial branding doesn't accomplish a whole lot, but it was done. Find a copy of results or schedules from that year and everything is branded Timbers.

75%? Seems they missed their forecast by a very wide margin.

Without the OPL giving out free league fees it would probably be well over 75% this Fall.

Sure it would. OYSA will only ever have the same old tired TA clubs along with a few TA wannabes like BSC. All the rest have enough brain cells to know that OYSA is not the place for real premier soccer clubs. It is kinda nice though to think that our team is playing for free, paid for by money your team paid last year :)

Even if OYSA had 75% of the teams, they'd still only have about 10% of the talent...

Same old tired TA clubs? What planet are you from? OPL offers what? THUSC and OSSA in a weird mutation called CU, FC (there is a tired club for you) and then what? Aloha soccer club?

As an example, lets look at spring's GU14 premier bracket, 9 teams, 4 from Crossfire Oregon, 2 from Thusc, and 1 each from FC, Pacific and Albany.

From OYSA lets look at BU14 (pattern here Boys are stinger at OYSA, Girls at OPL, give each the benefit of its strength) 9 teams, 2 from Westside, 2 from Santos FC, 1 from Eastside, 1 from CFC (FWRL CHAMPION AND STATE CHAMPION), 1 from WAFC, 1 from Academia Leon, and 1 from Bend FC.

Go ahead and play for free…Just remember you get what you pay for.
