    Nwcl

We are looking forward to visiting Portland and surrounding area for NWCL in August. Are their any recommendations for places to eat and visit while in town? Our numbers will be between 30 and 60 as we have a couple teams from our age group participating. Middle school aged girls.

I know this is vocal group but most of you are connected with soccer and understand the challenge of trying to put together a large group event.

I also know asking complete strangers can lead to some fun input but I think throwing it out there sometimes creates a great piece of advice.....

Thanks in advance to all of you for your input

    Welcome to Portland!

What part of town are staying in? Location will impact restaurant recommendations, but here is the Willamette Week restaurant guide, which is a good start.

In terms of other things to do, if you are here for the August 22-24th games, there is no Thorns game that weekend unless they can squeak into the playoffs; Timbers play the Sounders on that Sunday, but tickets are going to be very difficult to get for a large group. UP women are on the road that weekend, UP men are playing Linfield (DIII) that weekend.

EDIT - looks like Portland State women's team is hosting a tournament that weekend at Hillsboro Stadium; if NWCL games are on the westside that should be pretty close to you. Here is the schedule.

The Old Spaghetti Factory is a great place for large groups and good tourney food. There's one in Hillsborough, where most of your games are likely to be played. The one in Portland is much more fun but more difficult to get a large group in on a weekend.

It is good tourney food because kids don't have taste buds. If you want pasta that actually has flavor try Pastini. It might be tough to get 30-60 people in there but if you can your wallet and taste buds will thank you.

Where are you staying? That makes a big difference.

I would recommend the new Pietro's Pizza on TV Hwy/Canyon Rd. Very big and fun place for groups. They have Lazer Tag and a cool mini golf. Can get spendy but very fun. It should be close and easy to get to. Otherwise there is Big Al's off Scholl's for bowling etc and food but kind of far away. Those would be more for fun so if you are looking for good food other restaurants would be better.

Please make sure your team goes swimming and then eats a huge burger locally. Of course, I am just kidding and really do wish you enjoy your time in PDX and good luck to your team.

In my opinion, Portland is known for it's "local restaurants" and I would recommend giving these a try. If you plan ahead early, you can get some of these places to hold a place for you. There are incredible pizza places, really good pasta and other food choices to look into. Pizza, try Life of Pie. It is small but if you call ahead they might reserve a large chunk of their restaurant for you. For pasta, yeah the ones mentioned above are, well, similar to Olive Garden. If you are looking for pasta I would try Amalfi's. It is on the other side of town but they have large areas and the pasta is really good IMO.

The McMenemin's at Cornelius Pass Rd off HWy 26 is cool. It has a tree covered outside seating area that is huge and offers plenty of food and beverage choices, as well as giving the kids a place to run around a little bit.

If you go here or any McMenemin's you have to get tatar tots and plan loads of time because they will be on MeMenemin's time..... slow service

Mcmenamins is great for beer and pub food but painfully slow at times.

Go, but just not if on a tight schedule.

I'm sure John's Incredible Pizza could set something up for you. Games and things to entertain the kids.

In all my travels with basketball, football and soccer teams pizza places seem to be the best fit. Big, open and you place one order instead of 30 separate orders and it's really informal. A pizza comes and everyone grabs a slice while the next is on the way. It's not the most elegant dining or the healthiest, but it's where I always steer our teams.
