    Reasonable cost for weekend tourney?

My child is a U-12 and new to the whole "travel" tournament experience. We are a Beaverton area family that will be traveling to a Seattle tournament. Basically, I'm curious what a reasonable cost for my PLAYER ONLY should be for the weekend. The team will be staying four to a room in a hotel for 2 nights. (How do the players get any sleep?)

Also, do most clubs have the parents cover the team manager's hotel and expenses if the managers have kids on the team?

Just curious here, didn't think we'd have to fork over quite so much for a weekend of soccer for one person yet, making our weekend well over a grand if one parent goes as well. Is this something we just need to get used to? What is an appropriate age for this?

    $5 seems good

You actually thought your response was so clever that you spent time to type it and hit reply? Sad

$1,000 for a Seattle tournament? Ouch. Seems way too high. And why are the kids staying separately? I've never understood this at younger ages.

No, do not pay for team manager. Just no. Do, however, respect how much work they actually do, chip in for a generous gift card at the end of the year. Kids should stay with their parent or at least a parent of a teammate, probably no more than 3 kids to an adult. The weekend should cost you maybe $200 - 250 including hotel room, gas, food, and expenses for coach.

Forgot to mention, if you are paying for a room, and taking other parents players up to stay with you, get the other patents to chip in for gas and room. Should bring your overall cost down significantly... Maybe even down to $100! And then have fun.

What is reasonable? It depends. First and foremost, travel soccer will come at a cost. If your child is dedicated to playing premiere level soccer, finances will be a reality.

Pay for manager expenses? It depends. If a manager is in charge of the players for the duration, sure. I don't think it's unreasonable especially if the manager is handling logistics like meals, snacks, bed checks, wake up calls, laundry and traveling to/ from fields.

Four to a room? It helps with costs and player bonding. Players also learn about courtesy and concern for others. Issues, like sleep can (and have) come up, but gets resolved. Besides, after a tough day of games, players find a way to sleep.

Experiencing this type of travel gives them a prelude to what it wi be like at older the older ages and if lucky enough at the collegiate level.

We have done it with our kids and have had to budget carefully. We have made memories while traveling that was beyond the pitch. We have also travelled to cities and communities that we likely would not have visited, but were glad we did.

At u12, kids need an adult in the room IMHO

Our girls have travelled to many tournaments but years ago at U12 we were responsible to get them to the tournament and they stayed in our room. Some parents carpooled others flew and rented cars. As others have mentioned, we chipped in to covered some of the coaches costs but assistant coach had a daughter on team so they were on their own as far as expenses.

A grand? You must plan on racking up one hell of a bar tab!

a few hundred bucks. If you go (at this age it might be a good idea) then add your costs.

This is a pretty spot on response. We have done 4 kids per room and it worked out fine. If you have a team of kids with ADHD maybe not.

I totally understand your position. We had the same concerns when we did it. Our concerns were eased knowing the coaches, manager and even parents rooms were adjacent and near the players rooms. There were strict rules, I.e, no adults in room alone with any player, no players in room alone and buddy system when out of the room.

When rules are clear and followed, it can be an enjoyable time for all.

I don't understand why teams have kids staying together in rooms for tournaments that are close in Seattle. I understand that they may need a bonding tournament at the beginning of the season, and maybe one serious one during the year. However? For regular tournaments where most of the parents are attending anyway the 4 to a room travel tournaments are frivolous and too extravagant. These aren't college players. They are children u12-u18. They can get used to the college style when they go to college. Soccer managers and coaches are a little too full of themselves.

Definitely agree with that statement. If you can drive to the tournament, this does not need to be done. And maybe at the very earliest, U-15 (high school). Ridiculous to waste that much money. You could take the whole family on a vacation for that amount.

Yes, if it's well organized it takes a lot of the worry out of it. But is $500 for one player a reasonable expense for a tournament you can drive to?
