Joleon Lescott mulling over Portland Timbers offer

I know this isn't about youth soccer but...

God we need a stabilizing force in the back, it has been a disaster for much of the season and last night (despite the Timbers showing a ton of heart coming back) was 1 train wreck after another back there.

About time the Timbers get some high-priced talent after watching what Seattle, LA, and NY have been allowed to sign over the last couple of years.

The Timbers central defense has shown a remarkable lack of ability to consistently mark anyone from the opposing team. Not sure if Lescott is the answer, but it is hard to imagine that he is worse than what the Timbers currently have.

Of course, 99% of the people who post on this website have no idea who Lescott even is or what team he most recently played for. If it is not U11 to U15 Portland area girls soccer they haven't the foggiest idea what you are even talking about. Heck, they don't even know what their daughter's team is doing most of the time.

I applaud the effort, but you would be better posting to a Timbers specific website if you actually want to have a discussion about Lescott. You won't find many takers here, unfortunately.

Yet another player past his prime coming to MLS for a big payday. Maybe. Timbers could still use him, would be a good place to start fixing key areas of need.

I'm a Man City fan and I swear every time I see a head shaking defensive foul, it's Lescott. The guy is talented, but reckless.

Still, I'd bring him in. This is like you or me playing in a U8 game. We might not be great in a U17 game, but man we look like Hulk in a U8 game!

I hate to say this but MLS is not doing US soccer a favor by attracting only leftovers from EPL or any of the European soccer clubs. These players come over here for their "retirement" job where the games are more manageable for their tired and overused legs. Nonetheless, it would still be fun to see them play in the MLS games. Looking forward to the day when Messi and Ronaldo comes over to retire!

              I agree.
There's got to be enough talent in the USA pool even after football and basketball skims it.
There should be no shortage of 'bigs' that can play the back line available locally.
Maybe a problem is that US places too much value on the attacker and Defenders move up thinking they can't be successful in the back.

I agree with the above comments and I do see him being a help with our porous defense. That being said the previous poster stating he is reckless is also extremely true. If we think we get a fair amount of PK's against us now, just wait. Especially in a league where it now is a tactic to get into the box, draw contact and Greg Luganis to the ground (not to say that happend on Sunday, our defenders were the cause).

My main question is this...if we are to spend $2M on a person, is this the right place? I can talk myself into both sides of this argument, especially now that our attack is waking-up. My biggest complaint is Jewsbury and we have to find a solution if not this year next. Would $1.5M get you an incredible right back that can really attack up the wing and still be a stout defender? Of course this doesn't solve the BS that is in the middle at the moment but I contend that most of these issues happen by attacks from the wide areas either directly or through a cross.

But, kudos to Paulson for giving the freedom on the checkbook.

                    Solid

Another Ex Wolves guy who might come to the MLS just as Robbie Keane did but I dont think he will be as successful as Keane.

Hes solid but another player past his best.

So much for MLS being different... they are following the blue print of the NASL and going fail miserably. MLS was suppose to develop USA soccer talent (this was part of the agreement to host the world cup). The US will continue to be second tier on the soccer world stage and the little talent we have will continue to migrate to other countries. The MLS needs to figure out who they are... they are not the EPL, LaLiga,etc... They are a second level league at best ... or a stepping stone for players to migrate to the EPL etc... If we continue to think that we are the equivalent to the big time leagues by importing players past their prime who are collecting checks...we will fail.

I don't agree with much of your post. The MLS is doing well. It is growing rapidly. A very large portion of players are home grown, and that trend will continue as soccer gains more and more momentum in the U.S., which clearly it is. I don't have a problem with a MLS club reaching out to a EPL player past his prime to bolster a struggling back line. The Portland Timbers are still trying to win games. If MLS teams don't try to win games, the product suffers. I don't see MLS failing this go around. Are we a second tier league, yes. Are we a stepping stone to the EPL or other European leagues, sure, at times. But as MLS closes the gap, revenu increases, stars will stay home, maybe even begin grabbing a few more stars from over the pond. Roll with it, I say.

Growth is not always good. Balanced article, MLS is definitely taking some risks. We will see if it was worth it or not. Personally, not sure i understand the second NY franchise. Red Bulls dont even sell out.....in NY! Atlanta also NOT a good sports town at all. Same for Miami really.

I have no problem with getting over the hill Euro's... the issue is when they are paid 2X, 3X or more than your top paid players. You better get some productivity. Travel for US way worse than Europe teams.

                          Lets hope it works.

oh, and you should assume the $ for Timbers tix is going up and up. Has to or they may decline in competitiveness. Should be equal to MLB tix. Fewer games.
