    Premier Tournament Options

Looking for U14 tournaments this summer that have high level of Premier competition.
Prefer to steer clear of the whole stay and play scam.
    Any suggestions?

Pretty limited options without Stay and Play. Rainier Challenge in a couple of weeks. Both Crossfire Challenge and Mustang Stampede are Stay and Play and they are the two best tournaments that don't require a flight.

Sad - but true. Options are very limited. Unfortunately that is part of the reason the whole stay and play works. They have us by the short hairs. If you want to play against the best, you're going to pay at least an extra $50 / night to stay at a hotel we tell you to stay at.

Stay and Play is a total scam. If enough people boycott these tournaments maybe they will get the picture. Is it even legal to require teams to stay in their overpriced hotels that are giving them kickbacks?

Agreed, the funny thing is one club says, you pay the same price, the club just gets $5 for each room. But if you shop online discounts the prices are much better. I would suggest booking some rooms at the required and sharing. Others that need to save money, go elsewhere. Splits up the team, but they really can't enforce and I don't think anyone is really checking. The one advantage that I can say we had was a very good cancellation policy so we could cancel once the schedule came out for the games, we could cancel a night, we did not need.

Always tricky, traveling with a big group and seems like prices are really increasing.

It's legal and some tournaments do check, especially the ones that require you to book the hotels through a specific agency. That agency will report to the tournament organizers which teams have booked rooms and how many. If you want to risk it, the best plan is to wait until all of the "required" hotels are booked up, then they can't stop you from going elsewhere, provided there is an elsewhere available in the area...

Premier level anything requires travel, are you sure you know what your getting into? Is this your oldest child? The best must travel. Have you considered doing select level? Rec is also an option.

Surf Cup is religious about checking. If your team doesn't abide by the rules, they will note it and deny your team's applications in the future. They also may deny other teams from your club if they feel it necessary.

                    NO!

Traveling is bad, just look at the ECNL threads! Traveling costs money.

Stay home and play in the clash at the border and the Chinook Cup. Cheaper and better odds your DK get's a medal if they are any good. That's what this is all about, wining and medals right?

I think you missed the point genius. The point wasn't travel but the "stay and play" racket that some tournaments use to make additional money at the expense of the teams that are trying to keep costs down.

Every now and then the local tournaments will put together a pretty nice mix of very good teams. Maybe not at all age groups, but you do see it. I think several are at least worth the entry fee. Plus, they are close, it's summer... can be a fun time. Everyone will bash me on this site, but for me, the tournaments where you may get lucky with some good games are: Beaverton Cup, Clash, Nike Oswego, Mt Hood Challenge. For me, Beaverton cup has been steady, Clash has been improving, Nike maybe slightly digressing. Mt Hood gets a boat load of teams so if you play Platinum, you usually can get a couple good games. I personally find the following tourneys lower level: THUSC United, Cascade Cup, Chinook, Summer Slam, and really the rest. If I was going to pick 3: Beaverton Cup, Clash, Mt Hood Challenge.

ok, now I get bashed. but before you do... yes... I agree Mustang, Crossfire Challenge, Surf Cup, yada yada are WAY better. Duh.

I agree. The good tournaments post the list of accepted teams so you can see who is in your age group. We've had some great games at Mt Hood, United cup, Nike cup and Capital cup. If the tournament won't give you the list of accepted teams then just move on. It's not worth the risk of having nobody to play but b and c teams.

That's what the other ECNL teams will be saying when our ECNL teams apply for tournaments.

Imagine what they say when some of our OYSA/TA teams apply. Probably bust a gut laughing out loud.
