    Regionals/Newbie Question

My daughters team didn't qualify. Out of curiosity. I'm assuming that the post tryout team makes the trip? So if you don't keep your spot, you don't go to regionals?

Maybe. Maybe not. The team for regionals only must contain a minimum of 9 players from your state cup team. A team could certainly not take some of the players who end up on the B squad and could take some new talent who made the team. If the player doesn't even make the team at tryouts, they aren't going to get much/any playing time at regionals so those players usually choose not to waste the money and the sadness/embarrassment of riding the pine all regionals.

To be just a little more accurate, your team for regionals must contain at least 9 players from your league roster, not your state cup roster. Usually the same, but not always if you picked up some ringers for state cup.

True but either way there's plenty of wriggle room to add/drop some players. Why would any player go to Regionals if they don't make the team at tryouts? That's just sad and probably more on the parents' egos side.

There is the possibility of a player being on a US Youth Soccer state cup winning team, then moving to a US Club Soccer club at tryouts (ie. ECNL), who could, in theory, still play for their original team at regionals. You can be rostered on two teams at the same time, as long as the teams are registered with different national organizations.

Hope the oysa club would let them do both but could see why their old club might not due to being mad about them leaving....

Players added for Regionals must CURRENTLY be rostered for the club they would go with. For example. Westside Timbers TS Copa (00G) could take any age level eligible girl who is currently rostered on a Westside Timbers team. They could not take a player who was rostered on an FC Portland or Washington Timbers team - even if that player went to tryouts and made the U14 00G's team. Likewise, Eastside Aston Villa could only take players currently rostered with Eastside.

There are players who could decide to change clubs for whatever reason, or may not make the U14 season roster. Whether or not players who leave the team or club for the U14 season are invited to travel with the team to Regionals is a club and/or coach decision. I don't think Eastside is taking players who are not returning.

I wouldn't want them to go. Need kids and families that are dedicated to the team. If they are leaving, there is no dedication.

As far as bubble players, who end up on the B squad...why would they go to regionals with their old team just to sit the bench? A bubble player I know did that last year and it wasn't pretty.

                    personal choice.
As long as the coach is honest about potential playing time and the player and parents know ahead of time, could be a fun trip for the kid and a good experience.

Unless Copa TS players are registered only with OYSA and the FCP players are registered only with US Club. Then Copa TS could roster the FCP player. One of the quirks of having two competing national organization that don't share registration information.

When do the current season player cards expire, July 31st?

                          Excuse me?

There must be something to this question I missed. Our approach has always been your are on the team until the end of the season. If your team qualifies for regionals the season has not ended. It doesn't matter who tries out, who makes the team etc...the regional team is locked at the beginning of State Cup, this is at least true with USYS, does US Club let you play with this?

For you younger than high school age your season does not begin until fall, for high school until Winter.

It is always the team that earns the regional spot that goes, we actually would even delay tryouts until after regionals, knowing that if someone wanted on the defending state champion team they would wait...

Under USYS rules, you can submit a new roster for regionals that is different than state cup. The only requirements are that all players on the roster are registered with your club, are of the correct age, and that at least 9 of them were on your qualifying league roster. If you win regionals, you can then submit a new roster for nationals, but same restrictions apply.

But tryouts are in May for U14 & below here so teams change in May & the new team starts practicing & playing in tourneys after tryouts. Do the new players on the team that qualified for regionals not get to go to regionals or even practice with the team? What about players who lose their spot & end up on the B team. Don't they start practicing with the B team & go to tourneys with their new team? Sure does confuse things. Tryouts should be after regionals then! What if the team makes it to Nationals? The new players have to wait until after then to be a part of the team & the exiting/demoted players don't have to play most of the summer with their new teams?
