    Boys soccer tryouts

We have two boys that will compete in tryouts over next few days. Can anyone tell me where and who ( and why) is best? Younger age brackets please.

It depends on what you're looking for.
In the Portland area top premier competitive clubs include FC Portland, Westside, and Eastside.
Don't be swayed by the people who say OYSA is better or OPL is better, or that it's better to be in a Timbers Alliance team or it's better not to be.

It depends on where you live and if you want to drive for practices also.

I think it's best to find a coach your son likes. Which age bracket? Are you on the East or West side?

I guess since it is tryout season no one is willing to help. Everyperson for themselves! Long live Oregon!

Westside is know for competitive teams. Portland FC is usually known for pretty good coaches. THUSC is hit or usually miss in boys soccer. I have no idea about NEU. Crossfire is for U13 and above. The premier U13 coaches for Crossfire are both parent coaches. There is also Bridlemile who just recently joined with OSA, they are a great club IMO but don't seem to usually be competitive. That's all I've got for you. What age are you looking at?

i would think since it's tryout season people would want the good players to tryout for their club. i think the issue is that every other thread here is about "which is the best club" and the answer always comes down to, it depends on what you want..

start local, if that's not the level you need work your way up. the guy who just posted was close in his descriptions.

I agree. As a general matter, FC has a more consistent coaching/playing philosophy. Westside is more likely to have some really top teams. However, it's not in every age group and those teams tend to turn over a lot because the club focus is on collecting the best players. The coaching at Westside is fine (they have the best youth coach if you're lucky enough to get him), but the focus is on talent collection as opposed to development.

john bain? the coach they have listed, on their website, as coach of the U14s? he has a history of championships, and some will probably say he has a history of bad qualities. he is also listed as a coach for The Timbers Academy, so he's probably a good bet, based on facts.

again, it all depends on what works for your player.

Having first hand knowledge I would agree with what the previous few posters have said. Westside does have solid talent. In the younger ages for boys Westside also typiclly has competitive B teams in addition to the A squad. This may not mean much to some, but if you have a kid that is not clearly an A player and you play for a club that doesn't have the depth for a good B squad it may not provide a challenging enough environment for the player. Many clubs will have a solid A team but the talent drops off drastically after that, so if you are a bubble player it can be tough to be on a B team at these clubs. Everyone should make their own choice where they wish to tryout but this factor helped us decide.

Yes. The coach I was referring to is John Bain. He is a great coach and teacher of the game. If your kid is lucky enough to play for him, he will get better both technically and tactically.

                              the best team is

the one that motivates you kid to take his love of soccer as far as he can. this is a sport, after all. if you focus on anything else, you are projecting your goals / issues onto your kid, and serving your needs, not his.
