We have two boys playing competitive soccer next year with one about to enter U12 tryouts. Which club, coach and league is best for him? Why? No club bashing please we are honestly looking for advice.

Start with the club closest to you if you are happy with the coach and have friends, playing there you will get a look at the other teams and see if there is a better fit and can change if needed next year. There are some pretryouts this week that can give you a good idea if it will work. If not sure after the tryouts, just say so and call some other coaches to see if they will give you a try. Of course that may mean the player may start on a B team but if stands out then the coaches would probably move the player to the B team. If you are just starting, don't worry about the club or politics as much as the coach and team. Try to find at team where the player will get experience and have some fun. Like I said you can always change the next year.

If you want an ultracompetitive experience, if that's what you think is best for you son, pick a Timbers team since that's what they are all about. If he plays another sport, you might reconsider the Timbers experience. Not "bashing" the Timbers, just an observation and that I've heard that they have a policy that if you don't make 2 of 3 practice in a week you aren't rostered for that weeks game. It looks like NEU has a good team at that age group. BSC teams don't do very well, but the kids seem happy and they actually have excellent coaching. Many clubs have pre-tryout practices this week, you might look into that. He has a much better chance of making a team if coaches have seen him before tryouts (with 80+ other kids).
But I agree, it depends what you want. If you are serious about development, skills, tactics, go to Westside, Wa Timbers, or Eastside. They develop and it is obvious on the pitch. That NEU team is solid but they tend to send the ball long rather than build, and rely on a couple of big players that tend to be able to kick it over goalies heads at this young age. They are very physical.
