No names or players or teams please, but I have a question about the check in system / process (how cards are examined) before kickoff. How good is the system at preventing either older players (or any invalid player) from taking the field in violation of the rules? Also, what are the rules about late arriving players to games? Do they need to check in with refs first? Are those players cards checked? If so when?

Most of the time 2 of the refs will work together to do the team check. One will read off the roster and another will review the cards. Do they truly look at the picture on the card and compares it to the player? Not really. There are also times when only one ref does the team check. Those time they will often have the team manager help by reading off cards, but then there is no neutral party looking at the cards.
It really isn't hard for a team to use illegal players if they choose to cheat and have no morals.

The photos on our player cards look nothing like them. They look like a photo of a photo of a relative.
Also we've had several times when a player card was missing and referees are always understanding. They let them play.
It would be pretty unusual for a coach to try to sneak in an older player. What's the point?
Some of the bigger tournaments they are very strict.

IMO if the check and balance process in a compliance area is weak, there will always be bad actors to attempt to exploit it. I believe this occurs far more often than we might expect.

This happens far less often than those looking for excuses would like to think.

Does not happen often. Other teams will complain or parents and kids will talk and the club will get in trouble.

Leagues Require Birth Docs
All the leagues require Birth Docs to be received and reviewed by the Registrar. The systems also have them up load a copy for storage.
When the state cup games for OYSA (as I have seen), pull them out and review the players before going further. This is a USYSA rule.
There are those that try to cheat all every year. A Club has to have a good registrar to make sure what they get works.
Most all folks are honest. This is not a huge issue.

To get the card, proof of age needs to be provided. The club, manager, coach,, and some players and parents would need to either be in on it directly or by ignoring it.
To play on the team, a card would need to be provided for that person, so either the card was improperly issued (in which case, see above) or the player is using someone else's card, in which case the coach, manager, and all the players would know. Everyone lines up and the players are called out.
As someone mentioned, if a card is forgotten or lost, most refs are reasonable in league games - why not be?
In major tournaments, they are very strict. So many people would need to be in on it that I don't see it as much of an issue. If someone is desparate, I'm sure they can figure out a way, but I wouldn't lose any sleep concerning myself with the possibility that my children are playing against nonqualified players.
Regarding late players, the refs in most games check when the player comes in. If he/she hasn't been checked in at the commencement of the game, it should be picked up. Always in league games? Probably not. Definitely in tournaments.
For our club, we have to provide birth certificates when registering so I have a pretty high confidence level in the player cards. And yes, I do trust the club registrar. :)

Yes, you have to have valid documentation to get a player card..... but..... the refs do not look at the kid on the pitch when they look at the cards.

Again, why? To win a spring game? To ensure getting into the watered down NWCL?
Doesn't happen, if it did, sad.

Happens? Yeah - more than likely.
I don't recall the question being whether it is possible, or happens, in spring league games. I thought the question was how hard it would be if someone wanted to play illegal players. The answer is, not hard at all.
There are teams / coaches / clubs who put winning above anything and everything.

However, in the last 5 years my DD has been playing, you get to know the teams and the players. I have never seen it happen in spring or fall soccer. Where it gets suspicious are the summer tourneys. But those are hard to tell, as teams can have guest players as long as they are registared by a certain time itls legal.
