Last year 98 girls beat Cal North. But the 98 and 97 groups have lost so many players it is hard to say how they will do.

Obviously, the 99's lost a few of the Onyx players that were on the regional team last year. Where are they this year?

The kids on teams that get a fair amount of exposure are opting out of ODP for a number of reasons I will not give here. Most ECNL players have given up ODP altogether. They do not need it and the coaching on their own teams is often better. (You can see this by the performance of the WA teams at the tournament.) I am not going to throw stones at the ODP program. To each their own but people have figured out there are better ways to get what they want.

And AZ, WA, NO CAL, ID, HA, AK. Every state has their issues with ODP at this point. Wouldn't make too much of it.

There is nothing surprising about any state in the western US losing at any sport to teams from So. Cal. Where do you think all of the PAC 12 schools get so many of their athletes in all sports from?

So. Cal simply produces, on average, more D1 collegiate talent in all sports by a large margin than any of these other states. That is why it is considered a recruiting hotbed and Oregon is not. Sure, we get some D1 level athletes in many sports each year, but nothing close to So. Cal.

What does this say about Oregon's finest? Nothing. This is about So. Cal simply pulling from a much bigger, more diverse, significantly more competitive group of youth athletes than anything Oregon can come close to replicating.

Be happy, because the truth is that the majority of Oregon athletes in all sports would be playing low level club or rec sports were they to reside in So. Cal. This is not a put down to Oregon kids, but a statement of just how competitive youth sports are in So. Cal.

Agree with you on many of your points. However after watching games this weekend I came away believing that our top 18 kids in each age group could compete with SoCals best. Problem is we need to assemble our best and let them see that level of play more than once a year. I am speaking for a limited amount of games I was able to watch with Oregon facing SoCal but in those games we weren't out matched. In fact we hung with them and pushed the pace. But as game wore on we faded. Pace of game was very fast and physical. We don't see that enough. We need to put teams together more often to push this play. Drop the OPL. V OYSA bs and start building teams.

It is simply a much, much deeper pool. With the OPC split, many girls (including my DD) dropped ODP. There is only so much time and money to put into this sport. You can't have only half or so of the top talent playing ODP and expect them to perform well - competitively? Yes.

I am tired of another slam against Onyx. I already told you that a couple of our kids opted out of the trip. We cannot be expected to carry the whole state, let alone our age group. I know we did not do very well down there but what can you expect if our coach is not with just his team. We have to play a few weaker players from the Timber Alliance teams to make their parents happy. You certainly can see it from our point of view as we do not like always to rely on excuses.

You can't lose that type of quality and expect a winning program. If OYSA/OPC can patch up and ODP gets full involvement again (a long shot, I know, especially when you throw in ECNL), the teams will do fine. Until then, Oregon is not deep enough to compete against SoCal. That shouldn't be a reflection on the quality of the players the state puts out.

Oregon will never again be competitive in ODP. The Timbers will take the very best players for the USSDA on the boys side and the Thorns Academy (whatever that will be) on the girls side. And that's if Oregon ODP even continues. I can see the RTC continuing for the younger ages, at least for the TA club players, but by U13/14 those players will be in the Academy and ODP won't exist.

That is not an Onyx parent that you are replying to, rather someone who is so jealous, spiteful and bitter at a very young group of girls they constantly try to make fun of them. It is beginning to remind me of the Texas cheerleader mom scandal which ended in murder. Hopefully this individual will seek out some help and get a life.
