    Letter to parents/coaches from Timbers

    Dear Coaches & Parents,

I wanted to send you another positive weekly update from the Timbers & Thorns. It is the biggest week in Timbers history and there is a buzz all across the territory. Supporters are coming in from far and wide for the game on Sunday J

So you know, we are currently investing in and working on the future to develop the game. We see 5 key groups; players, coaches, referees, administrators and parents. The development of the game is only as strong as its weakest link, so we are working on strengthening each group.

As the only organization in Oregon able to offer coaching licensing classes, I wanted to let you know that OYSA, together with the Timbers, have developed a 12-month plan to educate coaches at all levels. We are also in collaboration with OYSA and PYSA to produce curriculum for recreational soccer clubs. We have struck a deal to begin filming aspects of this curriculum and offer it online for you in 2014. We are also working on offering online education for parents of both recreational and competitive players.

We have a small sided games committee actively reviewing developmental standards in other countries and will implement the most progressive global methodology for player development here in our territory. We will be doing pilot programs this spring and will then help clubs to fully implement the changes for the fall 2014 season. A number of clubs are very, very excited about this development. Please take a moment to see this incredibly poignant and funny video from the English FA website about kids playing on big fields http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1Lb5pDTaCg

We are now actively working with the referee association and have been active in helping set up three referee clinics prior to the start of the new season. We are working together to promote maximum coverage in all areas. Additionally we are also working on continuing education programs for referees that are already licensed. Since the Timbers got involved in leagues & tournaments, it has been brought to our attention that officials that referee youth games do not typically undergo a background check. We are now actively working with the referee association to put plans in place to rectify this, as we believe that that is a crucial priority and we will not rest until all officials do so.

So get your teams signed up and please let us know how we can go about helping and supporting your youth club or association, in any of the five key groups J

Keep your fingers crossed and your cheers loud for the Timbers on Sunday evening! We wish you and your families a wonderful Thanksgiving.

    Best wishes,

    Mike

I posted this letter on here to give those of you a chance who do not receive these emails a chance to see some of the information beign relayed to us.

Also what are your thoughts of the things put it in? I'm personally glad they aren't attacking the OPL (which we saw in the last OPL letter, the OPL attacking the Timbers). And overall I am looking forward to seeing what they actually do impliment. Of course we wont know till it happens, but at least they have an actual path put on paper, something that I never saw in all the years with OPL.

If you could step outside of yourself and your little Sally Pissypants attitude, I think you would realize that Oregon is once again in the middle of a transition in the youth soccer world. I think the folks involved in the last time learned some things and our doing a better job. Obviously there is a small group left behind either out of their self-interest or out of fear of change, but I believe the Timbers have actually conducted this change in a very upright way.

A lot of accusations have been thrown at the Timbers, and it is interesting to note that all of those accusations are things the OPL was guilty of in the first go round. Bottom Line Winter soccer will happen, Spring Soccer will happen, Fall Soccer will happen. If you chose not to be on the sideline that is your choice. None of us know you, but I suspect you will only be missed by those on your team, so go ahead an make your decision. For everyone else, this whole thing looks pretty good!

              Go Timbers!

Go Timbers the MLS Team, or go Timbers all of the bush league teams with the Timbers name patched onto their jerseys?

Actually the OPL has been dying of self inflicted wounds from DAY ONE. The fact that the Timbers and not the OPC is running Premier soccer is no ones fault but the OPC. You may not "get it" now but in one or two years you will set the difference between having a professional organization run youth soccer vs. a group of self absorbed DOC's.

Correction : The Timbers are running HALF of Premier soccer.

While the final commitments are not in the OYSA looks to have more than half the teams and more than half the top teams from this falls league results. So I get your point you are being overly optimistic on what fraction of premier soccer will be under the OPL umbrella.

Either way the OPL is screwing the kids to maintain what exactly?

Wow, hit a nerve there aye. For a league that is supposed to be so dominant you seem very insecure about it.

What is he talking about? Unlike some other states, which have both a State Referee Committee and state and/or local referee associations, neither Oregon nor Portland has a referee association.
Sure makes it sound like he doesn't know what he's talking about.

I think this is very good news and think/hope the OPL is also looking at this closely.
