Best way to teach possession ball?

What is the best way to teach possession ball to young players?

    #2
Don't teach possession. Teach them the basics over and over. Then they'll be able to easily possess the ball. People wonder why teams can't possess and why they elect to play boot ball. That's because if your team lacks skill you have to play boot ball. Why do you think Timbers possess the ball better now? They have better skilled players now then when Spencer had them.

For girls have them join one of the Timber Alliance club like Westside Timbers or Eastside Timbers.

Honestly parents stress too much about possession at the early years. As you get older the only way you will ever play good fast possession is when your players are so confident on the ball they aren't constantly worried about turning it over. To get that confidence at the younger ages its important to work on the basics over and over again, and realize its okay to over dribble at young ages. Of course you want to teach them the basics of passing and how to recognize the passes, but if thats all you stress, when they get older all you got a kid who just wants to get rid of the ball as soon as possible because they don't know how to keep it.

Think about the players that are the "studs" and the top players at the older ages. In almost all their cases they were the kids at u11/12 that over dribbled and were constantly trying to do too much on the ball.

It's not about dribbling. It about touches and quick passess. Coaches should be making players pass and move the ball too. To many young teams focus on passing long balls up to the fast forward who can dribble and run. What happens later is the one or two players really develop but, the rest of the team lags. Eventually, at older ages team formations change and the long ball team end up loosing. Possession ball is a style that takes years to develop. NOt all about the one or two "studs" on the team. Most of the time these kids die out too.

                  hmmm

put the fat kids in the back and have them boot it upfield to the super wicked fast kids...then you score...then you possess an epic victory. That is the American way and we know soccer. U.S.A. U.S.A.

1)Possession soccer IS what develops superior technical and tactical skill.

Working technique over and over (which is what most US coach do) fails to develop decision making skills.

                    2) The problem with Spencer is he didn't know how to use the players that he had. Even players that were subpar under Spencer are greatly improved under Porter. That is because Porter has a clear idea how he wants them to play and coaches them accordingly.

3)The best way to teach possession soccer is to fully understand possession soccer and all the details that go into that style of play. Not that helpful, I know, but very true.

Listen to all the coaches out there claiming they are "possession-oriented" coaches and then watch their teams play. Major disconnect between what they think they are teaching and what they are ACTUALLY teaching.

Agree, many of the winning teams at younger ages don't really play possession ball but, clueless parents think it's great all those fast fowards. My question - are there any clubs that really work to teach possession style of soccer in Oregon?

Please tell me you are not a coach, because you haven't a clue.
