good point. i think it's because in high school you typically have U18 players playing with u15 players and so forth. i think as a ref it's much tougher to call. and then you mix in really good players with really bad players going against each other, its a recipe for disaster.

just look at Sunset where the coach is not afraid to play very young players, they go up against Gresham. you end up with concussions, ambulance being called, etc... in that game the ref was clueless. A perfect storm.

Well.... you are also playing Gresham home of EST. They play rugby out there and call it soccer.

Does anyone have an update on the Gresham girl taken away in the ambulance?

It's also because people care more about high school games than they are willing to admit so they look for excuses when they lose. Particularly when they lose to a team with fewer or lesser club players. Blaming the ref is an easy way out.

With the new league realignment, are Gresham and Oregon City in the same league? If so, better have multiple trainers and ambulances at that game. Both confuse soccer rules with rugby rules. At least neither team tries to play soccer, so it will be a fair matchup.

I was at the sunset/Gresham game and was there to support sunset. My daughter isn't in high school yet so I don't have a dog in the fight. Sunset was the more physical team to start. In the first 15 min they put a girl in the hospital. It wasn't a fair tackle that did it but a dirty push from behind. I can't blame the Gresham girls for playing physical after that. If someone out my teammate in the hospital you can bet I'd play harder. What shocked me the most is right after that incident another Gresham girl went down and the ref blew the whistle for a foul. Good call on his part trying to control the game but some if the sunset parents went crazy. They need to learn a little class.

Is the girl ok?? I have younger multi-sport athletes and am seriously beginning to worry about the high injury & concussion rate in girls' soccer.

It's high. Once your kid has one, then you speak with the doctors who will tell you how common they are. My kid is very careful, yet she still got hit in the head and got one. It wasn't a dirty play by the other player, but it was reckless.

Don't know where you were sitting but from my point of view it seemed the two players tangled up and both went down. The Sunset player jumped up and ran after the ball and the Gresham player stayed down. I might be wrong but I don't even think they whistled to stop play until someone kicked the ball out of bounds. So it couldn't have been very "dirty push from behind" as you describe. I do not advocate dirty play whatsoever but physical play is part of the HS experience because of they large discrepancy between talent levels. Teach your player accordingly and hopefully, in the 4 years, they will not experience injury.
I also notice no one mentions the Sunset player who suffered a season ending concussion or the Sunset player that suffered a torn ACL in this very same game?? I hope all these players the best and a speedy recovery.

Physical play is part of the game and goes up with the intensity of the competition. If you think HS is physical compare it to the college or pro game (where the talent level is higher than club so it's not due to talent disparity). Injuries are part of sports, including soccer.

My kid plays college and it's very physical but you don't see the size and strength mis-matches that are common in high school. Physical contact that would appear normal if the kids are similar size become downright scary with a 40lb size difference.

My daughter got all of two yellow cards in her club career (one for hanging on a jersey no less) but managed to get 6 in her junior/senior years of high school. Did she play differently? No, she played the same but so many of the younger kids were much smaller which led to a lot of knockdowns. Often it was just a 50/50 ball they both go for but the small kid would get flattened. Playing club with her age group no one falls but against a much smaller opponent things are different. My kid did find it frustrating especially if she didn't initiate the contact that led to the foul but understood that it was part of the HS game.

I know this is about 6A but did you see the highlight of Wilson beating Willsonville on an own goal? Ouch...

Oh man, I just pulled up the video on OregonLive, that sucks. I mean great job getting there but that's a nasty way to get knocked out. Feel for her. Similar thing happened in 2011 6A championship; handball in the box, PK, game ends 1-0.

Different poster here. My daughter plays JV at sunset and we were at the game. I hate to admit it but I also believe it was a dirty play. The whistle blew right away and it was a two handed push in the back. That particular sunset player is the nicest girl off the field but is without a doubt a dirty player on the field.

Then I'm thinking of a totally different play. Was the Gresham player a forward or defender? Not that it matters, I just hope she is OK.

Defender I believe. Only one player went out on a stretcher and ambulance.
