    alliance select teams

The Alliance clubs will soon announce the formation of three women's teams at U16 through U18, all from the Alliance clubs. The Select teams will represent all the Alliance clubs and will play in college showcases. In order to tryout and be selected players must be from the Alliance clubs. Coming this August before high school tryouts.

So basically what FC, THUSC and OSSA currently do but the girls get to train together on a regular basis? Sounds wonderful

I heard this a few months ago......I heard that along with the college showcases that the Girls Timbers DA will play other MLS Girls DA teams.

If you look at this years Alliance teams at GU16 there are a lot of players. Not everyone will tryout but if everyone did it would be a crazy amount of players to choose from.....
in the '97 age group alone there are 7 teams worth of players to choose from.

This is what PDX has been needing...consolidation so that the best players are pooled together to compete and showcase the true PDX talent.

Except you must join an Alliance club, not palatable to my DD, and then you get the same Alliance coaches. I wouldn't recommend it at all as there are many other ways of getting excellent competition and college prospects.

At least OSSA has stated that their WCDA teams will have separate tryouts and no prior affiliation is required.

Portland Thorns Staff will be coaching along with some players....now it doesn't mean that the players will be good coaches but......it's pretty cool

Apparently FC has announced it was well, but I don't think they are doing tryouts, It would appear at least on the boys side they just take their Navy squads, probably will do the same on the girls side.

Yes, agreed. No thank you at all with the coaching staff put in place. Promises of the Thorns coaching staff will probably never happen. Most of the promises on the boys side never did go through.

How are those OSSA results working out for you? Talk about the same coaches over and over again.... same sh...t packaged in a more expensive bag. Soccer in Oregon is a joke

Except the Alliance is not just PDX. Includes Bend, Rouge Valley, and most likely soon Eugene. Alliance teams will showcase true Oregon talent, not just Portland.

True Oregon talent is mostly Portland. Except maybe a few.

Many, many people post and claim that due to Oregon's small population, we are about 1% of the national total, teams from Oregon have a hard time competing with teams from large states like California. And that is very true. Rarely does Oregon shine in national competition or tournaments. Now you apparently are thinking that having 4 teams "showcase" Oregon talent will work? By showcase I assume you mean other than playing one another in state. Do you really think that's true? Over the years many club teams have had players from all over the state. Some did well. But I'm quite sure that divided the available talent from Oregon into 4 teams will be a very poor idea. It will make a lot more money for the Alliance folks, if that's your goal.

Pretty sure the goal of the Alliance teams is to give the stronger players from these clubs opportunities to play in better tournaments than their own club teams can compete in. Doubt there is a lot of money to be made here. No one is talking about fees yet, so who knows.

You are exactly correct. It is maddening how many people don't get it.

The way you produce great players and great teams is increasing the size of the funnel, not decreasing it.

Decreasing it assumes that we have created all the talent we ever will, so now we need to concentrate it.

Increasing it acknowledges that player development is ongoing, and the more people we have coming through the system, the more growth and development we will see, eventually reaching the place where the total level of competition goes up.

As a population of parents and stakeholders with clubs around the state we need to make it clear that our expectation is to broaden the competition base not narrow it.

The only people benefitted by narrowing the base are the clubs who try to claim that they are the "only way". For them it is not about development, it is about control, and greed.
