Commitment-you commit they don't

Playing time-about half is you are a fulltime DA starter vs HS and Club

Competition-two are three very good games a year against very well run MLS DA programs, other than that glorified clubs playing in the DA

While they're many Improvements that can be made with the Academy, Your comment that they play glorified clubs Is not one of them unless yoe regard crossfire, which is average, since crossfire teams by any measure are used to evaluate and confirm if we think we have a quality team here in Portland. Rather, we need to evaluate play time, coaching decisions etc. Within that context, parents need to decide whether they want to put their child into that pressure cooker as the confidence of more kids have have gone down then have gone up. The irony is that the parents seem to take it worse than the kids. As for the hundred dollars to try out, we pay that much to play in a inferior tournament. Just don't listen to them when they tell you not to come watch. Pretend that you don't speak English like the many people on the sidelines and watch two days of fun.

You need to read my response to the post that indicated that the da only had two two good games all season against two MLS Academy teams. I used crossfire as an example of good games. By the way, they are an average Academy team. Not superior but definitely worth trying out for the portland DA for such teams. now you can scamper back up north. You folks finally got your first win of the season so celebrate with your coach and go eat at a Hometown Buffet. I definitely think the timber coach could beat your coach in any physical challenge. Lol.

Based on players being cut with about 8 games left in the US DA season and just prior to club state cup who wants to play for the Timbers DA?

This program is to benefit the Portland Timbers first, not your kid. Even the English programs focus on the player first. When English Academy players are released they are sent to a large combine so other clubs might pick them up. At the end of school age there is even a large combine with American University so they may continue their studies here in the states.
The Timbers just cut you, you are expendable. Basically a piece of garbage that can be discarded at any time based purely on the needs of the organization.
Before you try out for the program be very aware.
1. You need to make a yearlong commitment.
2. You’re playing time is limited to selection in 26 games, you will be notified the day of the game if you are playing.
Here is there commitment to you
1. The term of your stay with the Timbers DA is day to day as we all learned a few weeks ago.
2. Coaching is below the DA average with the Smith’s running this program.

Choose this option very carefully. Ask yourself if you would leave GW with your most precious possession, if you say yes get your head examined and pay $100 for the tryouts.

In theory playing with and agaisnt the top youth elite HS aged boys should be a great development and competitive experience.

Why are you identifying lack of talent as one of the problem areas? Both the U16 and U18 teams are competitive. If you're expectation was that they'd come out and dominate the academy then that was an unrealistic expectation.

The heavy handed approach and the pettiness of the coaching staff is something that the Timbers should work on. That's a GW issue. So is the looking for every opportunity to stick families with a fee here and there. It makes the organization look both insecure and cheap.

Let's see what happens after a full season is done. They ask a lot from the participants. It will be interesting to hear if they thought it was worth it. More than one already concluded that it wasn't.

I agree that decaf coffee is like non-alcoholic beer. I also agree that the questions were all negative, sort of non winners like "when did you stop beating your wife."

I think the group needs to stop blaming GW for everything unless they want also to credit him with the recent wins. I credit them to Porter and real soccer being finally played. Rather, the buck should stop with the Smiths. I imagine A Smith would agree.

As for the DA, the U18 have over-performed given their skill level. The Westside Galactos could have probably done as well as the U16s.

Stop saying the kids on the U18 were unilaterally asked to leave. They were asked to leave for various reasons. The Timbers backed down where they were wrong in one case. They just do not communicate too well. Note to A Smith. You are coaching kids and should communicate with the parents to some degree.

As for whether to try out, the DA is only right for certain kids. By U16, parents would know those kind of kids. They are self starters and soccer is a passion for them. If you have to get on your kid to practice on their own or they are complaining about how soccer has interfered with the rest of their lives, this is not the right place for your kid. Your kid needs to be nuts for the DA to be right for them. If you talk to these same nuts, it does not matter about playing time. They want to stay even if they are getting screwed.

Your son should not try out for the DA. Clearly, you do not know what I am talking about.

Go back to beating your wife--or have you stopped? Mixing the two concepts, as you have done, creates a certain meaness to your post. Just perpetuated by me.

The U-18 roster is down to 18 players, after late season cuts. The U-18 team is on the outside of the playoffs looking in with a big game at Crossfire this weekend

The U-16 team is holding on to a wild card spot but San Jose has two games in hand. To make things even harder the U-16 team has 6 players that are under the 25% start rule and two more are under 30% meaning these guys are going to have to play minutes or maybe they will just be released to make room for the staters.
