Do you ever feel like you have entered the land of OZ when trying to have a conversation with the self-proclaimed soccer Gods of Oregon. These Gods are also known as DOCs and coaches. It seems that you are always talking to the scarecrow (no brain), the lion (no courage) or the tin man (no heart). I would like to hear about the dumbest, most obnoxious things that have been spewed forth by these Gods to you. This is meant to be somewhat light hearted. Maybe, just maybe, if they read it they may realize how they sound. I will start.

I asked the DOC what he thought of a local college overnight camp. His response was “If you want to throw your money away by having college kid’s coach your kids go ahead.” What made me think of the scarecrow was the fact that half his coaches are close to being fresh out of college. Does this mean I am throwing my money away by having my kids at his club? HHMMMM!!! Side note. My daughter played better after the camp than she has the last six years.

Why ask if you aren't going to listen or respect their response? You obviously didn't like the response so you come here and criticize it.

OR.... Maybe you should change clubs if you feel your daughter is now playing better from different coaching. Sounds like she may not be getting what she needs from her current club.

Its either "professional" coaches who are trying to protect their jobs and perceived performance or parent coaches who all pick the team to best suit their own child, I mean their forwards.

Go to as many camps as you can afford and you child wants to attend. Soccer skill is made of many tiny pieces. If your player can pick up one or two things they didn't have before - they have improved. The cost benefit ratio is up to you.

DOC gods

I find it annoying when a DOC comes in to over-coach a team that they do not normally coach. In high stakes games they put players in positions where they have never played. Is it an attempt to mix things up? make something happen? Show that they know more... It is the land of OZ for sure. Be on the sidelines while all the parents shake their heads as a DOC puts a defender forward—like every new coach has tried that change already. What ever happened to championships being won in practice? Where players work to learn a position and they should basically do their job in a game, to the best of their ability. It is not about dumb luck of trying something new at the last second. It frustrates everyone and is unsettling to a team, but hey they know more right?

When asked if it would make sense to consolidate talent across a couple of high school age groups for the girls teams where erosion of talent is decimating the competitiveness of the team

"The club has to maintain a certain number of classic players on the girls side. As you know we are the largest provider of scholarships and this is not possible without numbers"

When asked about other opportunities for a higher level of player for the female player:

"It isn't as though women play professional soccer so as long as they are training and playing that should be sufficient"

BTW, you seem to forget that the scarecrow,the lion, and the tin man actually had the attributes of mindful thinking, courage and heart.

Your DOC gave you an honest and legitimate answer. The message seemed to be that "there is no place like home." It is likely that your daughter enjoyed the bonding and a break from the normal occurrences in her routine, and perhaps learned a few tips to help her in her skills.

Of course you must be talking about u15 and older....otherwise players should be moved all of the time. If you are with a club of coach that thinks championships are important from u9-u14 than I would run away like hell!
