OSAA Soccer and Parent Coaches

Parent-coaches favoring their child can be a problem but is usually isolated to one spot on a team. High School coaches improperly favoring players from their Club team, that the coach is employed by, is a much bigger issue that infects whole high school programs and negatively impacts generations of players.

That is called a conflict of interest, when the club coach is forced to try and balance out coaching a HS team for a 2 1/2 month truncated season with a year round club coaching salary and revenue producing club side hustle privates, tough spot for sure. This is of course very problematic and runs rampant across the state at many HS programs and has done so for decades. Perhaps as the title suggests this is a topic of concern that member schools & the OSAA should look into cracking down on & not just for the sport of Soccer. Regarding coaches that have kids on a HS team, regardless of the level or the sport I've noticed over the years these coaches tend to be much harder on their own kids than the rest of the players, at both the club and HS level which is a bit unfair for these to the kid trying to develop confidence and validity, as they are already labeled the 'coaches kid' but to your point it is very isolated and doesn't infect an entire team or program.

The 6A boys 3 Rivera league has 2 boys schools with parent coaches on the sidelines.

Yes, and then coach goes around asking all other coaches to vote for their kid to have them placed on League first team (as well as other players) but whatever. They don’t have a state championship ring though.

Agreed, it's inherently a conflict of interest that many coaches recognize and work to manage. Unfortunately some will exploit their position of trust and this is when it slides quickly into corruption and player abuse. Selecting and promoting less-deserving dues-paying players from their club, denying fair opportunities to more deserving players that are not paying dues to their club, recruiting players to their club in order to drive more fees and numbers at the older age groups to support "elite" league participation . . . And then people wonder why certain high school programs are chronically underachieving.

A club director or club coach leveraging the year round use of a PPS turf field or a private school for their club, since their club is without any fields or the type of fiscal leadership capable of developing their own fields is yet another layer in this corrupt monstrosity. A club director or club coach leveraging the year round use of a PPS turf field or a private school for their club, since their club is without any fields or the type of fiscal leadership capable of developing their own fields is yet another layer in this corrupt monstrosity. Nothing wrong with a youth soccer club using school or park fields, especially one that is located in a dense urban area where real estate is expensive.

If the local government/school district/parks district is giving one club (located within its boundaries) preferential treatment, that's a problem--the only obvious example around here is Clark County making Harmony only available to Columbia Premier.

While uPDX is a somewhat shady operation, lots of other Portland clubs have access to the fields of Portland Parks and Rec and Portland Public Schools, and I kinda doubt that the head boys soccer coach at Lincoln has any control over field bookings.

How do you know this? And why would anyone feel like they have to comply?

Coach told player they lost out on first team by one vote (to coach’s kid) and that he drummed up votes.
