awkwardly all the girls finals featured 'b' team level of play and even 'b' team champions from cpsc. Very bizarre to call this a state cup championship standard for the ladies and then force them to travel to hawaii...***

I'll ignore the girls side, because winning an OYSA girls tournament is like winning the NIT in college basketball--who cares? Congratulations, you're #69! Woohoo.
On the boys side, you will notice that all of UPDX's titles came in the high school ages, where ENCL may have given them a recruiting advantage; goodness knows they've been busy poaching players from other clubs (and been VERY aggressive at doing so) ever since the club was formed. But at the younger ages, before a lot of poaching occurs (and before kids can drive themselves to practice--high school changes the soccer scene in many profound ways, some of which are difficult topics to discuss), UPDX got shut out, with only one team advancing to a final, and getting smoked by Westside. But I'm sure that BM is already texting all the kids on that WSM roster--and their parents--offering them all sorts of incentives to come over.
How other clubs will respond to this is an interesting question. UPDX got huge very quickly, being formed of a merger. So far, we haven't seen any other clubs merging (other than joint ventures like OPFC, which has been around for a while), but I could see it happening.
As for Simon... he's still new on the job, so I wouldn't write him off just yet. My general opinion is that teams that participate in exclusive travel leagues (ones that other clubs cannot apply to join on an equal footing) probably shouldn't be in State Cup. If TA were to enter teams, nobody thinks they wouldn't smoke UPDX (or any club team) by four goals at least, but MLS Next teams, especially the ones that are legit academy teams, don't view local youth clubs as their competition. And if TA tried to enter a team into State Cup, I'm sure everyone else would cry foul.

The northwest was quicker to adopt soccer as a prime sport than other areas of the country. You can thank the Timbers for that actually, so we were ahead of the game.
Now don’t poop yourself tonight while watching the news

I was skeptical about leaving our OYSA, USYS E64 team to join United’s ECNL program but after watching them dominate the state cup, I’m sold.
I'm telling you, either jump onboard or get left behind and keep experiencing disappointment.
The business of youth sports is ugly but history doesn’t care. History only remembers champions.
