Here is what I gather from recent posts and from parents I have spoken to.
thorns academy has a poor environment for may kids to thrive it. It could be that they are not big enough or fast enough yet but for most kids this is not a good option. No real second team option either.
Oregon Surf from experience tends to play favorites with some kids because of parental whining or whatever. They have a poor history on the field at ECNL level. At RL level they are also mid range across most age groups.
There is a perception that here ECNL > RL > GA. At Oregon Surf there is little movement between ECNL and RL teams.
Why do families stay on RL? Is it that it hits budget better with lower cost?
There are or will be 4 GA teams in the area surrounding Portland (Oregon Premier, Westside, OPFC and BCSA). Why would a kid not go check out one of these four instead of being in a lesser league with fewer options at the older ages to get looked at through the team. Maybe the RL kids aren’t focused as much on playing in college? Are they at UPDX because they think they will be on the team if and when they ever make ECNL?
Let’s take the weakest GA club, Bridge City. Not going to bring up CFC because they are in Salem and not really in the same geography as the RL teams in Oregon. I know Bridge City lost many players to NWE (Oregon Surf) a couple of years ago because they were captivated by the promise of ECNL. I think most of them wound up on the RL with the eternal hope of making the ECNL team. BCSA doesn’t have kids coming to them of the same quality that are coming to RL teams. They have kids that would not make RL rosters on local RL teams. They do have some experienced coaches there with connections. Why doesn’t a group of RL players just decide to basically infiltrate those teams and have access to some good competition and access to additional opportunities to be seen? I would think access to be seen would be better at a GA team than an RL team.
So you refuse to consider BCSA? Why be on an RL team over Westside or OPFC? Is the culture at those clubs horrible? I really don’t know. Finally if I lived in Portland I would consider just over the border at Columbia Premier? (maybe no one wants to deal with traffic).
I have had kids at BCSA and Oregon Surf before it was surf. The kids are weaker at BCSA but the coaching has been at least as good as at Oregon Surf fka NWE fka THUSC or whatever.
But I just don’t understand why if you have a kid that want to play college would you not look at at GA instead of and RL team?
