    Who sucks the least?

Question of the day. What club really gets it? Almost every club has gone through a gimmick of sorts, XFire Oregon, Timbers Alliance, now we have a Surf, Soccer Chance Academy. It just doesn't stop with name changes we have leagues, ECNL, ECNLR, Elite Academy, Elite 64, National League, GA etc…….Then we have the European Club affiliations (my personal favorite) GPS and Total Football Club Barcelona. Yeah, it was just yesterday I saw scouts at Delta park watching OYSA games (for you gullible parents scouts where not at Delta)

The constant is it’s the same kids. Maybe different groups come through but its basically the same every year. The one big change is the MLS Next and the Timber Academy taking what they think is the top players.

Back to the original question. What club services the community the best and doesn’t use the gimmick?

What I think, PCU. No gimmicks just a club, being a club in the neighborhood.

Biggest gimmick club, OPFC. Why, Elite 64, this is basically Utah’s version of OYSA but they call it Elite 64. I call it a gimmick. That and they were the Elite Academy League, gimmick !

So giving the options to have players play in multiple leagues is a gimmick? I wish our club would play in more than just oysa and the same 6 teams each season

Not enough to drive to lake oswago but I wish we had more games for the money

Play in the opfc ecnl R and you can play 3 of the 6 teams you play in the oysa 2 more times. Thats not a Gimmick it's a Con.
Be careful what you wish for you tool.

        Dreams can come true.

If the point of this thread is giving kudos to the neighborhood clubs, I'd agree with PCU and mention others like LYS, Albion, Foothills and Hillsboro. All seem to have competitive teams in the younger years, whose best players eventually get picked off by the bigger teams, leaving a Division 1 or perhaps Premier Silver team in the wake for the later years. However and importantly, the remaining-older neighborhood teams are competitive and having fun. So, and to the apparent point of this thread, kudos to them.

            How is OYSA a gimmick?

Would love to see the bigger clubs focus more on developing players to play at an elite level, rather than signing up for "elite" leagues in order to recruit and collect the top players, then simply roll the ball out for practices. It seems backwards.
There's no getting around the allure of ECNL and other top showcase tourneys, the fact is that if you want your kid to have college scouts look at them you have to go where the heat is, and that frankly is MLS Next, ECNL and other top flight showcase events.
But the club model seems largely to be using the ECNL brand to lure the top kids, rather than develop the Portland talent to be ECNL level.

Leave albion out of this list. They went to sherwood, tualatin, foothills, woodburn, etc. They are doing everything in their power to lose the community based aspect of their club. Paid for a franchise name and hired mostly inexperienced coaches that preach they coach the Albion way. One of the biggest phonies in the area. There is not much to congratulate them for. Being small doesn't deserve a medal. They lose players to bigger clubs because they don't provide the services they list. They are also much more focused on outward expansion than actually caring for their members.

Foothills and PCU are community based clubs.

PCU executive compensation just bothers me. Jeff made $231k last year, roughly 10% of the total club revenue. That's a nice cut. Good for him. On the other hand, one of the younger girls coaches told her team that she would make more money working at McDonald's...

Wow! For a “community club” that’s bonkers.

He actually makes $262,000 if you include “other” compensation, which might be for coaching a team or 2.

Is this even legally possible for a non profit? Didn't someone get in trouble for over paying an exc at the Portland Marathon years ago?

It's not just possible, it's common that nonprofits pay top execs in that range. Where do you think, for example, most of the taxes we're paying for homeless services are going? They're being paid to nonprofits, who like most businesses pay their execs way too much and their employees way too little. The marathon exec got in trouble because he got greedy-er, by skimming and using the charity's funds to directly pay for things like home remodeling projects, shopping trips, his personal vehicle.

I think clubs like PCU and EST are doing it right. Try to develop kids and have fun in OYSA. D1 scholarships are going to MLS Next kids. After that you are looking at D3, NAIA JuCo's Girls is a little different, replace MLS Next with ECNL, mostly Thorns, they are just better then NWE. I think OPFC UPDX are just wasting money.
