I have personally witnessed Thorns academy coaches say body shaming statements to 2 different 13 year old girls.
one male assistant coach told a player that her minor injury would never fully heal. Another female coach and leader of the academy told a player with a cold/flu that she isn’t “game fit”. The kid is a stellar athlete and was 13. I don’t know if these coaches realize that you don’t speak to very young girls this way and it can be damaging to their body image and overall self esteem. This is the kind of crap that triggers disorders and depression in young women.
But yet, it seems to be the norm at these so-called elite clubs.

I should add that the coach told the kid with the cold that she wasn’t game fit as part of an annual assessment and not because she was sick during training. She pointed out that she could not run as long that day….and it happened to be the day of the assessment. But she told the girl that she needs to work on her physical strength. Really? As a 6th grader?

Do I approve racist, sexist, mentally and physically harmful comments? No. But these do not apply.

Just because someone notes you are not game fit on an assessment and then notes you have no stamina today due to illness, does not connect these two comments. It is just coincidence. A coach should be able to say “Not Game Fit”, in a sport based on fitness(!), and not worry about it. This feedback can actually help the player, they are their soccer COACH. As for telling a a kid that something will not heal, yawn, are they a doctor? No. We often in life guess about something. So the coach guessed wrong. Reality, have thicker skin yourself and teach your kid too as well (they will benefit! In life) and talk to an actual doctor if you are worried.

I think all players should know how far they are. And be forced to lose weight. I’m tired of these chubbies out there breathing heavy and not able to keep up. Good for the Thorns coaches for making sure these fat little bastards are in game shape.
Better to let these girls know the reality of life early. If that means throwing up in the sink to cut weight, so be it!
