I fired up the google machine. Both teams have lost both games.

A better question is Does Jodel Wright have a clue about what he's doing? All losses, no goals scored. Let's hope the next two go better.

No he doesn't. It is sad to see what they are doing. Many 09 prospect players not joining. Timbers need to clean house and bring someone like Valeri to run the youth academy. But I believe Timbers don't care. Not their business model.

Help me out here...are the 09s still considered U14 for this tournament? They haven't bumped to U15 yet? Or is this 2010 and 2011 boys?

I don’t think this is a coaching issue. I think this is a development and selection process issue. What has been done to develop players and did the best players get picked for the TA? Evaluate the discovery program and its goals…measure those goals and adjust if you don’t hit the goal. Now for selection of players there are good players at some clubs not part of the TA and some clubs have lots of players selected. I speculate that lineage and which club you play for has a huge impact on if you make the team for everyone except for the top 5 players in the TA.

The bottom line is that the Timbers academy does not value development as evident by TA program and how many players they have developed to be on the first team…

It's a coaching issue because Jodel Wright hand-picked the Discovery players and the squad for this tournament. I agree with what you said about player development--do local coaches/DOCs value players who can combine and be unselfish in the final third? Or do they prioritize players who shoot low-percentage goals from 25 yards out because of the wow factor, only to find out later that those low-percentage shots don't hit the back of the net all that often against better competition.

I think everyone is assuming Jodel has a say in who makes the team. Does he really?

JW is Timbers discovery manager and has had final say for selections at the 09 ODP tryouts the past two years. He's the head coach at the Patterson Cup. For better or worse, these are the guys he wants. I think we're seeing that the training for many of this group prior to getting to this level has been sub-optimal, and that's primarily on Portland-area clubs and coaches. Surely the academy training will be better.

It is not the training. It's the players selected. There are probably 8-10 prospect 09 players missing..some of them weren't even at Discovery (Cuervos for example). WSM players said no. UPDX 09s playing up said no. Etc etc.. That reflects really poor on TA. It is not a choice anymore for top prospects.

Oregon 09s can't score goals... look at the state cup final. Two "good" offenses vs two average defenses and the only goal scored was on a ridiculous keeper error.

They’re a combined 0-6 after the U14’s just lost. They each have another match today.
