    The OSAA Ranking System Works

The OSAA ranking system usually takes a beating by pundits. I would argue that it works out pretty well. In 6A, the #2 and #3 ranked teams are still alive. The #1 and #2 ranked teams in all of the other brackets are still alive. Rankings wise, Clackamas is the lowest ranked still left (#8) in any of the state tournaments. Amazingly the 4A bracket held form very well, #1, #2, #3, and #4 ranked teams still alive. The ranking system may not agree with all people but it doesn't appear to be a completely out of whack system.

Finally something that Oregon does better than Washington. Not having a ranking system can really hurt the playoffs. Washington has forced some teams out that should/could have advanced due to not seeding prior to the playoffs.

If that's all your criteria is, then by all means, it works.

Does it really matter? At the end of the day, there is only one champion and they have to beat everybody anyways. Ranking only matters to those that don't win the championship...

          of course it works

you get to play at home with a #1 #2, #3 or #4 overall seed virtually every match in the playoffs.

I thought oregon was a democratic state?

          it is what it is.

I get where a higher ranked team should get a home game, but not EVERY game should be home. I think you have to look at where each team played the week before and alternate who is home and away. If both teams were home/away the previous week, then the higher ranked team should get home (or you can flip a coin).

Exactly right.\, with one caveat. It also matters to those that loose earlier than expected.

                Why change it?

Keeping it this way lends more credibility to the power rankings.

First two rounds higher ranked team is home but after that it's the team that has played more away games gets home.

Whis is a perfect system to me.

                      Not true--in every case

When 2 teams meet, in the 5A Semifinals for instance.

Seed #1 vs Seed $ and Seed #2 vs Seed #3.

Guess what they both have had two home games prior to the semi match.

Now the #1 team gets the 3rd straight home game as does the #2 seed.

So in the last three years including play in matches.

Woodburn has hosted 11 straight home playoff matches, winning em all.

The only time they have had to travel is to Hillsboro for the neurtal site final.

Seems like the perfect system to me :)

Which seems right to me. If Woodburn is the higher rated team and both teams are coming off of two straight home games, then the higher ranked team should get the home game. In HS soccer, I am not sure that home field is a huge advantage however. Certainly traveling is a disadvantge, but only if it is a long distance. Traveling 10 or 20 miles isn't a big deal.

Why not make them the official host?

Wait, with this system OSAA did.

                            10 to 20 miles?

Summit, Bend, Hood River, Churchill just to name a few have traveled there in the past years for playoff matches.
                            It's not a big deal since it's 10 or 20 miles :)

                              Woodburns 11 straight home games

over the last three years in the OSAA power rankings sponsored playoffs-- would of never happened in the prior format. While this unbelievable fact is hopefully an exception that will be addressed by the OSAA, in Soccer, home field advantage is huge, especially with travel on yellow school buses to far off destinations. Take nothing away from this team being a good 5a team, but come on, how can you get every playoff game on your home 'grass' field for 3 straight years? Answer: a computer doesn't not have the capacity to reason.
