    Bend Refs Got A Raise????

So, I heard from a referee today that all of the Bend referees got nearly a 50% raise starting this weekend AND that it was being subsidized by clubs in Bend?!?
    1. Why aren’t ALL of refs getting a raise??
    2. Why are my club fees paying for this??

why isn’t OYSA covering this??? They don’t charge enough already for refs?

(to clarify, this has nothing to do with quality of referees or anything, but why isn’t it the same throughout the state?)

I am really hoping this is BS but I heard the same!
    Can you confirm?

Supply and demand. When there aren't enough people who are willing to take the BS of the fans (parents), then those fans will be paying more in ref fees to field the game for their kids.

Great. Bend referees will be even bigger homers than they are already.

        Legalized bribery.

Refs should be paid by the league, or equally by both teams in a match.

          Isn’t this OYSA’s responsibility?
regardless of location all referees should be paid the same (based on experience!).
if Bend refs gets more, everyone should. Is this not happening now?

Clubs take the money and pay kids a little more than a cashier to be a referee. Tax free. Why don’t referees get benefits?

This is all about lack of refs to cover games. My guess is oysa came to bend clubs and said that if they can't cover games due to lack of refs then they were going to schedule less home games and more travel games to areas that so have enough refs to cover the games. So bend clubs had to come up with a solution. Paying out of pocket more money to get refs to cover the games is better to then then having more travel weekends for their families.

I’ll just say, as one of those refs, we bought this up with the league and OYSA a couple of months ago. Nothing was done. I don’t know why the clubs out here are having to pay for it now, but that doesn’t seem fair.

The league office knew about this two months ago! If they sat on it until this week, that is not any fault of any club.

I believe OYSA contracts refs out to different groups. Portland might be different than Medford or Bend.

Let’s be clear that this isn’t because of a referee shortage. I mean there’s shortages all over the state, but Central Oregon isn’t uniquely different than anyone else. We’ve got plenty of refs out here.
once again, a money grab by the league.
next, it will be the Portland clubs who are paying for a huge raise

I have seen numerous games over the years in Bend. It is obvious that the clubs have been paying refs for a very long time!!!

Not a shortage issue at all. There are plenty of refs. We just don't want to get paid barely above minimum wage for this job.
we brought to OYSA a long time ago, and they had time to negotiate. They chose to sit on it, not taking it seriously. Now our club is paying the refs directly, when the rest of the state is not paying theirs, so it is coming out of our progress as a club.

Refs asked OYSA for a raise

                          OYSA refused

Refs said ok then we are not working

Club stepped in to help and agreed to pay the shortfall out of their own pocket (example, if ref gets $40 but wants $50 the club pays the $10 extra out of club funds). It was either this or no refs and games get cancelled.

                          Refs and OYSA agreed

Kudos to the club putting the kids and games first. The problem here is with OYSA and the Refs not the club.

110% agree. *** is OYSA doing? How does it get to this? This should never fall on the club to fund. I don't think refs are to blame either. They wanted more money and frankly, should get it for what they deal with.

This is an OYSA issue through and through. Why on earth would they refuse to pay.

wait until the Portland refs do the same thing. you really think that the Portland clubs are going to pay for this bump? No chance. No way this is budgeted by any of them. This means OYSA will be footing the bill, and then guess what....fees are going up!
Way to go, league admins. Who do I make my extra check payable to?
