How did the ECNL teams do today?

The complaint is that uPDX was "promising" more players an ECNL spot than they had room on the roster for, and only making the cuts after families had signed up for a year commitment (and owe a years dues to uPDX, even if they decide to leave the club). I put "promising" in quotes because I'm sure uPDX will argue that it wasn't an ironclad promise, only a promise of an "opportunity" that the player had to subsequently earn, but "the deal isn't as good once the check clears" is unfortunately far too common in many types of business.

This sort of complaint is not new to uPDX, and is frequently heard at other so-called "academy style" clubs: The A team is overbooked, and the hard cuts aren't made until the club has the players' money already. When your club's business model is as shady as an airline, that's a bad sign.

Some other clubs will tell exactly what team you will make the day after tryouts, and you generally have to stink pretty badly to get dropped afterwards. (And some coaches--John Bain at Westside comes to mind--have "no-cut" policies; if you make his team and stay in good behavior and work hard at practice, he won't cut you).

Which is the best policy, I don't know--but I'm generally for the notion of a "parent's bill of rights" for youth soccer: One of said rights is the right to leave (and to transfer to another club without penalty) if a player is cut or assigned to a lower team than promised at tryouts. And that includes a pro-rated refund of any pre-paid dues. And I'm surprised nobody has threatened OYSA with an antitrust lawsuit for its practice of allowing member clubs to "hold cards"--can you imagine e.g. refusing to pay a store for shoddy merchandise and then being told you can't shop in any other stores until the bill with the first store is settled, because the merchant has put a "hold" on your credit card?

Yes, to bad for your kid not making the team. Good news you didn't have to pay the athletic fee to the school. Bad news for UPDX, kids were told to come tryout, they would make the A team (in some cases after OYSA regionals were complete) so they signed up. Then 'bait and switch" no A team but B or C team. Even thought there is a monthly payment plan you owe the whole amount of money. Uh Uh Uh love it and pay it. If you don't pay you can't change clubs.

As for other clubs locally and their philosophy about player team placement/movement, much like your singular example of a local coach at WSM; 99% of all the other clubs & coaches follow suit & don't drop a player down to a B or C team after embedding them to the 'A' team during the course of a seasonal playing year
