UPDX is neither a powerhouse club, nor the devil that everybody has been making them out to be. They are however, a club trying anything and everything to take that step up. Respect that. Same with OPFC. I imagine a lot of upcoming "eff you" and you have no idea what you are talking about" posts are coming this way, but it is what it is. Westside, ADF, UPDX, OPFC are the top clubs in metro. Imagine....just imagine for a moment if the top players at each age group (along with players from (outlying but also strong clubs) CFC and ETFC) were available to create top teams. Teams selected by a neutral party we ith no ties to any of the clubs? Those teams would be extremely competitive Nationally, and would also change the politically corrupt and toxic culture in P-Town. Alas tho, this is a pipe dream.

However, they did not get enough across the different teams to become a dominant club. It has been said many times on this forum that Oregon has the talent to compete Nationally, but that the talent is spread out across so many different clubs. Ideally, the top talent would go to TA, be developed and create a strong Academy. Sadly, that has not happened. One could argue that is due to politics (what? Politics in youth soccer?!) but also due to over an reliance on TA affiliated clubs getting their players into TA. The other problem has been that players are not being developed at TA. Players that should never have been selected were mixed in with good players that had a lot of potential, and unfortunately the end result was apathy

the reason Timbers academy isn’t good is because it’s not a focus for the pro team. Look at other mls clubs (ny, fcd, philly) that actually try to take young players into the pros. Gio Savarese relies on some sort of experience for his teams. So did Caleb before him. Neither of them have been known to give fresh teenagers opportunities, and there’s no room for young players to break through. Since they don’t look to bring up young players to the pros, it’s not in their best interest to invest heavily in their academy. Which is why the coaching isn’t top quality and opportunities for TA players aren’t as plentiful as other mls clubs.

UPDX is a good club overall and should get props for stepping up to do ECNL. At most age groups they are middle of the pack so it will be interesting to see how their number 1's do in spring/winter ball then state cup. My guess us they will be top 1-3 at every age group here.
UPDX needs continuity in coaching.
The TA is toxic. Those that have had kids there know this. The Timber do the bare minimum and do not hire true professional coaches as they are content with local re treads running things.
Regarding the "B" team suckers... Kids signed up to compete. Deal with it. The best players play.

Looks like this forum is finally generating some good thoughts.
If the clubs could set aside their need to sell themselves as the best, and instead collaborate on a team at each age group, it would be well received as an alternative pathway.

If ECNL was in Portland metro and not ran by BM my older kid would have joined immediately. He refuses to play for BM though despite the recruiting efforts .
