Great YouTube video about state of girls ECNL and how to fix it

This was posted by someone else in another thread, but thought it was great and should have its own thread.

check it out. Good thoughts on why girls ECNL play is not good and too many fouls in the girls game.

This is so spot on. I don’t know about the “new point system”, but I could see how this would be useful for friendlies and scrimmages.

absolutely 100% have seen this here in PDX ECNL. Coaches screaming every direction to players, players scared to do anything, and kids I watched since they were 9 years old lack any real development in their later years due to being afraid on the field.

and the fouling in girls soccer is atrocious. It absolutely ruins the game. Kids with any skill cannot do anything because some brute player will come and destroy them as soon as they touch the ball, most of the time without penalty.
great video and thanks for posting. Coaches/parents, please watch this.

If a young ladies goal is to play the best and move onto D1 soccer then she needs to be in ECNL. 80% of the kids playing in ECNL go onto play D1 soccer.

The kid doing the Maradona over the ball and getting roughed up should play faster.

In the "Hand of God" game, the English were fouling Maradona like crazy, multiple red card fouls that weren't called.

And yet despite that, Argentina won.

One English football writer summed it up nicely. Even considering the fact that Maradona scored a goal on a blatant handball, it was the English who were the bigger cheaters in that match, thanks to the thuggish play.

ECNL is just a league. ECNL does not dictate style of play. They solely organize league games, playoffs, and showcase events. Style of play is club/coach based. You can find all styles of play both in and out of ECNL.

Correct. Club soccer is a business. Clubs market their college recruitment on social media every signing day. The more college commits the club has the more attractive it is to parents. I suspect that the Club style of play is more dictated by the style of play that most colleges play; fast, direct and physical.

However, ECNL in Portland sucks. Don’t fool yourself that she is going to play soccer a D1 school if you let the {Thorns} coaches abuse her. If your coach is incapable of developing players, it doesn’t matter if they are ECNL, OYSA or whatever other league.

Point is Maradiona wasn’t a U15 girl playing State Cup.

ECNL= Play fast and move the ball or find the bench.

You’re an idiot. You just not have watched the video. The point this guy is making is that the girls are just kicking the ball and knocking each other over. He states that they need to pass and move, but they can’t because Becky Bruiser is coming in hot to break some necks.

By the way, your statements lead me to believe you know very little about soccer. And very little about ECNL in general. It’s become known as the pay to play league where money trumps talent. Unless you play for clubs that have zero fees, and by the way, they are the clubs that win and send most of their players to D1 schools.

not all ECNL clubs are created equal. Someone said 80% go to D1…that’s BS. And certainly not true for Oregon ECNL. More like 2% here. More have come from OYSA to D1 than local ECNL. That’s a fact

More D1 girls commits have come from OYSA in Oregon than ECNL? You will have to give us a link on this one. That's just not true.

It is actually very true. ECNL has only been a round a few years and the OYSA clubs have been sending boys and girls to D1 for many years.

ECNL in other states far exceeds D1 Commitments, but not in Oregon.

the 2 clubs here have a very low D1 ratio. And UPDX/PCU/Westside and others have more D1’s than Thorns and NWE. Especially on the boys side

This could be true because ECNL is so new to the Oregon girls’ soccer scene.

Or it could be because Oregon ECNL is very weak.

Agree it is weak in Oregon. Oregon ECNL is prioritizing winning over development in the younger age groups. By the time the kids are u16 they won’t have the technical and tactical skills to be successful. The “Bella bruiser” and boot ball style no longer work.
